Summer’s music festivals are the ideal places for all sorts of bands to meet up and give birth to new creative projects. Such was the case at this summer’s Montreal’s Osheaga festival, where [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Flaming Lips[/lastfm] frontman Wayne Coyne interrupted an interview [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Death Cab for Cutie[/lastfm]’s [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ben Gibbard[/lastfm] and Nick Harmer were doing with Spinner to ask them about the possibility of doing a collaboration EP.

According to Coyne, The Flaming Lips have been doing short collaborations with many musicians recently, including [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nick Cave[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neon Indian[/lastfm]. Gibbard and Harmer were interested in joining too and the two bands planned to make it happen mid-interview.

Death Cab has already been in the spotlight a lot this summer, with their new album Codes and Keys that came out in May, the two awesome shows they just played at the Greek Theatre last weekend and the newly announced show at the Fox Theater in Pomona on October 14th. (Get tickets here.) The band putting out new music with The Flaming Lips can only add to fans’ joy. The new material will most likely consist of extra unreleased tracks from Death Cab’s most recent record that The Flaming Lips will add their spin to.

Ben Gibbard has been tied to The Flaming Lips before, when [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Postal Service[/lastfm] (his side project band), covered The Flaming Lips’ song “Suddenly Everything Has Changed” and also remixed “Do You Realize” for its EP Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell in 2003.
