interpol coachella [Video] Interpol And David Lynch Team Up For I Touch A Red Button Man

Since its creation 14 years ago, the band Interpol has developed a hypnotic sound, with its somber instrumentation and lead singer Paul Banks‘ almost-monotone vocals, which many have compared to those of Ian Curtis from Joy Division. At Coachella this year, the band showcased why it has garnered such a good reputation. As the sun went down that Friday night, Interpol played its biggest hits and sounded truly amazing.

Usually Interpol shows are noted for their accompanying light displays, and while the Coachella show had plenty of that element, the band tried something different as well, playing a short film by the legendary film director David Lynch on stage while the band members played the song “Lights” off their newest album, Interpol. The clip was recently released online for everyone to see.

Interpol met David Lynch a few years ago and approached him with a collaboration in mind just last year when the members knew they wanted to create a special set of visuals for their upcoming Coachella show. Lynch showed them a sketch of a character called “I Touch A Red Button Man” he had already created and the band decided to have the video set to the song “Lights,” which is usually performed under red lights onstage. Just like in the animated clip, the red gradually gets more intense and overpowering leading up to the end of the song.

The video is completely in black, white & red and its only character is an elephant-like creature who does nothing but push a red button repeatedly. It’s creepy and it goes perfectly with the beats and tone of the song. Check it out below:
