My ears were ringing.  My neck blistered and burned. Mustard, relish, and beer amalgamated over my pants. All of these ingredients spelled a successful day at the 2011 KROQ Weenie Roast.  After reveling in 9+ hours of amazing music with one of the most enthusiastic and downright merry crowds I can remember, I know without a doubt Saturday was a day for the ages.

If you were present at our annual summer gathering, I’m hoping you left in similar conditions as I, and I encourage you to share with us some of your favorite moments from this year’s Weenie Roast on the other side of the page.

Perhaps you need some time to recuperate, so I’ll spare you a few seconds and list a couple of the day’s highlights for me.

1.  Young the Giant and Foster the People opened our Weenie Roast with sets that dazzled the early afternoon crowd.  One that was quite larger than I think most expected. Unique local flavors were on full-display amongst an azure sky and a light breeze.  Absolutely pristine conditions for a summer concert.  Fans sang along in unison to KROQ singles such as “My Body” and “Pumped Up Kicks,” and all was right in the world.  It really felt like a party for all ages.

2.  The crowd.

Upon my entry I took notice to just how happy the entire Weenie population was. Some attendees were chillin’ in the shade, cracking jokes and sipping on their beverage of choice.  Couples were strolling around holding hands in almost honeymoon fashion. I saw a guy hold his hands in the air and pirouette during Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks,” a move that would have scared me in any other situation.  Everyone was cheerful together, a sense of camaraderie that was most evident when I witnessed two girls running to the main stage during Face to Face, tripping one another in their frenzy and face-planting into the concrete. Everyone immediately came to their aid, helping them up and assuring that they were okay.  Sure I was laughing hysterically inside, but I was indeed humbled by such a catering scene.

3.  The Foo Fighters crash the party. As if the main-stage lineup wasn’t already impressive enough, a one-hour set by the Foo Fighters made this night something special.  Some fans wore the “O, my God” look on their face, others were weeping tears of joy. The girl next to me took off her shirt and starting humping my fellow phone-op Nick’s head as he screamed, “This is f**king crazy!” As Dave expressed, “All we got are hits!” And it was hit after hit after hit flowing from the speakers for an hour’s worth of rock n’ roll.  Job well done Foo’s.

Enough of me, share with us anything memorable that occurred during your Weenie experience.  Print lasts forever, and it’s a great way to capsulize one damn good time. If you hate writing, just list the bands that blew your mind.

Oh my god, the lineup was amazing, the best bands were Rise Against and the Foo Fighters, I was practically screaming my lungs out! I give credit to Linkin park, it’s the easiest task to follow up to amazing bands full of intense energy!

Great show but..WTF? From the official website:

WHAT CAN I BRING?
Allowed: One sealed bottle of water (up to 20 oz.), food in a clear, plastic one gallon sandwich bag, sunblock, binoculars, small pocket-size cameras and small purses.

We take a cab to the show, pickup about $40.00 worth of food and water (in our 1 gallon clear plastic bag) for our group and head to the gate! Where we are promptly told “No outside food or water”.
Hey we just read it on the site.. sorry they changed the rules.. throw it away or take it back to your car… we dont have a car.. sorry eat it before you go in or throw it away..

We ended up spending about $160.00 for food and water (not counting the beer) and feel ripped off!

Cool to see Airborn Toxic Event and Rise Against.
Bad Religion-Foo Fighters The Strokes were great.

Linkin Park- well lets just say my neighbors car stereo is louder than they were playing, and from the lawn the sound was pretty bad.

Everyone did an awesome job! Young the Giant, Face to Face, Cage the Elephant, Bad Religion, The Strokes, THE FOO FIGHTERS!! & Linkin Park put on AMAZING performances! Kinda felt bad for Linkin Park though, it’s not easy following The mighty Foo Fighters! Everyone was so exhausted from the awesomeness of pure Rock & Roll the Foo’s delivered by the time LP hit the stage we were all beat. I wanted to cheer louder & go crazy for LP but I was drained & the bad sound quality we had in the lawn did not help. I had a blast & this Weenie will def go in my books as one of the best! I’ve been to a lot of Weenie Roast’s & this one had the best crowd I’ve seen in years! Everyone seemed to be enjoying all the great music & having fun! Well done KROQ!

Overall the show was amazing! Too bad they screwed the sound on Linkin Park’s set. You would think they could have fixed it sooner than the last few songs in the set, I mean they were only the headlining band. Feel bad for LP. From the looks of it I’d say half the venue had left by mid way through LP.

The only headlining band? I’d say the Foo Fighters are um…somewhat popular.

That totally sucked about the gallon bags of food! It was actually party of the fundraiser… you fill the bag with food good enough for you to eat not some junk from Dollar tree then on your way into the concert you put it in that massive can so they can send it to the disaster victims… So try not to be so sad about it.

My favorite part was meeting BAD RELIGION backstage before their set! Thank you KROQ and THank you MOMMY for bringing me to the RADDESt Concert.. better than LA invasion in my opinion… and can LA RISING top this?? I will let you know…

This was my first Weenie Roast and after that night, IT WILL NOT BE MY LAST. Everything was terrific. The food, the lineup, THE FOO, EVERYTHING. Missing a day of studying for finals, that night was worth it.

Ms. Double December was right in front of me. The broad dropped those stupid shades she was wearing and i tried tapping her on the shoulder to return them and she sped off . Made me look like a jackass for trying to do one good deed; any way i have some knew sunglasses as a memento and a cool story on how i got them.
thanks! check my ebay auction out for greasy dirty knockoffs

Got to see all my favorite bands in one day. Epic. Neon Trees closed the first stage perfectly, Rise Against brought the energy up to a new level and Foo Fighters blew my mind. Everyone else was great too of course. Now that I can check Foo Fighters off my list all I have left is Rhcp, Sublime(the real one) and Nirvana. Time machine here I come! Bummed I didn’t have enough cash to get a shirt though, but if anyone knows where I could find one that’d be awesome. WEENIE ROAST KICKED MAJOR ARSE!!

Great show as usual, all the bands were amazing except Linkin Park. They had some serious sound issues that led to the crowd in the lawn chanting “turn it up!” and it made me long for their 2007 performance. Gotta love idiots on the lawn making little bonfires of burning plastic to dance around, thanks for the toxic fumes. I’d love to get a copy of those Linkin Park polka version songs that played over the speakers after they went off stage, that was some funny stuff.

My favorite moment was the kid hardcore dancing in the Loge area….section EE…who bumped this dude’s wife. He pushes the kid to the floor. Wait two bands later, the kid comes flying out of no where and starts beating on this old dude. Well it didnt take long till he was getting stomped on the ground. Security took the kid away and let the old man be…..PIT FIRES!!!!!!

crazy line up.. crazy fans.. rise against.. damn.. can’t get enough.. blew out my vocal chords screaming along to savior..

grossest moment – other than the kick ass bands..
watching a blitzed hipster chick grab a j from some guy’s unsuspecting hand.. rip a huge hit.. take a breath.. seeing her cheeks expand like a chipmunk then puking everywhere.. multiple times.. the crowd around us laughed their asses off.. she then proceeded to dance around the puddle.. was pretty amazingly gross to watch.. like a train wreck.. couldn’t look away..
funniest moment.. watching some chick get her guy so hot and bothered by grinding on him that he stained his pants.. then she had the nerve to get embarrassed and start blushing.. frickin classic

The Strokes were amazing, the main reason I went to the Weenie Roast, they are my favorite band. ADTR were amazing, so was Cage The Elephant. But I was disappointed with Linkin Park; I love the band for like 10 years now, and it was my first time seeing them, I expected them to be amazing, since they were the main headliners. But I had a great time.

This was one of the best line-ups in a long time!!! Everything freakin’ rocked.. I went to see my fav Linkin Park. and guess what, They came on and the sound SUCKED ASS… We were more towards the back and it was so awful!! What a bummer. I wait almost 8 hours to see Chester and the sound sucked.. Oh well, everyone else was amazing..

All the bands gave me a stiff neck for rocking out so hard the next day especially Linkin Park and Foo Fighters but it was so worth it!

Dude this was nothing short of amazing!! Im fuckn glad to say that this was my first concert ever!! Its like losing my virginity to Megan Fox! haha. But this was just to awesome KROQ, i loved how the Bud Light Side Stage was just as great as the main stage, well at least for me being a huge TATE fan. and im glad to say i got to touch Mikel Jolett when he hopped in the crowd! lol. Young The Giant and Foster The People were perfect! And it
was great how Neon Trees finished off the side stage, amazing live band. I was so beat from screaming and waving my arms for the side bands that i was beat for Face To Face and ADTR. But once Cage the Elephant went on i was back on my feet, The Strokes got me pumped up again, and i know people are saying Rise Against does to much KROQ shows but those guy were freaking awesome!!! never complaining again hahaha.Foo Fighter stole that show!!! Highlight of the night Dave Grohl’s yelling “SURPRISE!!!!” that was priceless. i wanted to scream for Linkin Park but i was just so beat!! lol. But i eventually got back on my feet again and started screaming and doing my thing! hope next year is just as awesome!;)

Without a freakin’ doubt Rise Against was my favorite part of the night. And that’s saying a lot when the entire show was spectacular. I feel like Tim was defending me personally when he mentioned all of the Rise Against fans going crazy. My throat was killing me after their set but it was beyond worth it. Just an incredible day!

definitely the Foo Fighters’ surprise appearance. As soon as Rise Against was done, you could hear the beginning notes of All My Life. It was AWSOME!!!

The show was great. You guys were great, and the highlight was definitely the Foo Fighters. However, my girlfriend and I took seats after leaving the lawn, because after telling 4 different security guards about the rampant moshing that was hurting people (ultimately resulting in 2 FIRES that were burning plastic through the night), my girl and I jumped down from lawn, said forget you useless security, and joined the seated area!

June 8, 2011 12:36 pm

My favorite part, aside from FF, was the security at the entrance that was searching people as they walked in……….you could have brought a 5 foot bong and they wouldn’t have noticed.

Foo Fighters and Rise Against Were Incredible I was So Ecstatic to finally see the Foo Fighters Live also i thought it was pretty bad ass that during rise against up in the lawn seats some people started a Fire Pit and it stayed on pretty much until Linkin Park lol
