The Postelles pose with Last.fm Discover's Jerry Rubino
When Is This It dropped in 2001, the album and its unkempt quintet begrudgingly saved New York City rock music. A decade later, Angles hit like a non-threatening tornado, introduced with predictable gusto minus the impact. Even if The Strokes make a million more Angles, we’ll pardon band, for their indelible debut will inspire NYC bands for decades to come.
Cue The Postelles: a group as indebted to Casablancas and company as it is Buddy Holly and parents with good record collections (there’s a reason to purchase physical music…think of your children!), blending that modern NYC garage sound with a pop classicism that will implant each song lovingly in your head for days on end.
Watch The Postelles perform “123 Stop” live from the Last.fm Discover Studios:
“123 Stop” bridges the garage rock inflections The Strokes revived with the pop melodies fellow Manhattanites Vampire Weekend delivered on their debut, and The Postelles follow this winning combination throughout the album. Vocal harmonies lead no-frill guitar licks through infectious pop tunes that deliver as many hooks as Meet The Beatles, though the Liverpudlians’ young naivety is nowhere to be found on The Postelles. An unabashed New York bravado paces the album, from the passive-aggressive lead single, “Fell Asleep On The Dancefloor” (“I’ll do anything I’m told to / ‘cept anything I won’t do”), to the “Mr. Postman” catcalls of “Hey Little Sister.”

Even at a time when retrospection rarely feels refreshing anymore (Cults are to the Supremes, as Arctic Monkeys are to…), The Postelles keep themselves honest by not over-indulging their parents’ music histories with copycat syndrome (ahem, Cults) and maintaining a roots-rock sound that has driven New York City bands from the grungiest back alley’s to the largest stadiums. If good ol’ fashioned pop-rock is your cup of tea, look no further than The Postelles.
