With our morning coffee and croissant, we also got a little [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Foster the People[/lastfm] interview and acoustic performance for breakfast–thanks to Kevin & Bean! Watch their exclusive in-studio acoustic performance here.

Off air, Lightning grabbed Mark Foster, Mark Pontius and Cubbie Fink and asked them the question we always want to know: What kind of new music are the musicians of our favorite new bands listening to?

Foster and crew happily relinquished their favorites to the judgement of the rock universe. Check out Foster the People’s taste and tell us what you think.

1. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jai Paul[/lastfm]

Unofficially endorsed (and heavily sampled in new single “Dreams Money Can By”) by Canadian R&B artist,[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Drake[/lastfm], London’s dreamy trip-hop electro-soul artist Jai Paul skyrocketed to popularity after releasing his single “BTSTU” in 2010.

Eventually signing to XL Records (who re-mastered his music blog hit), Paul’s sound is likened to another Drake-endorsed group, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Weeknd[/lastfm], and fellow Londoners, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Hot Chip[/lastfm].

2.  [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Metronomy[/lastfm]

Another London-based band, indie-electronic group, Metronomy, hit the alternative music scene in 2006 with their début album Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe).

Similarly to London sound-a-like band Hot Chip, Metronomy has obtained much of their success as artists by creating unique, playful remixes of over thirty other artists including [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gorillaz[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ladytron[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Frank Ferdinand[/lastfm].

3. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Fitz & The Tantrums[/lastfm]

Much loved Locals Only band, Fitz & The Tantrums, have played their distinctive brand of gritty neo-soul in the sunny KROQ backyard to a bunch of die-hard rock ‘n rollers who couldn’t help but clap along.

After the 2010 release of their début album Pickin’ Up The Pieces on Silverlake’s Dangerbird Records, 2011 has seen the stylish, hardworking band  hustling all over the world–playing concert after concert, festivals, radio shows, and late night television shows.

4. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Converge[/lastfm]

’90s-era punk-metal band, Converge, had probably been working out their harsh hardcore sound a few years after Mark Foster was born.

Considered the fathers of the now-popular metalcore sound, Converge is known for complex songwriting rather than prototypical simple punk rock chords with some of their influences being [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Black Flag[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Born Against[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Suicidal Tendencies[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Cure[/lastfm].

5.[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Dirty Projectors[/lastfm]

Yale Collegiate-turned-indie-music-mastermind, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dave Longstreth[/lastfm], left school to put out luxuriant, yet cerebral indie electro-pop with his project the Dirty Projectors.

With seven albums under their belts, the critically-acclaimed band is still kind of an ”underground” sensation– much like similar bands [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Yeasayer[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Deerhoof[/lastfm].
