After checking out the list of bands playing Weenie Roast 2011, you might have asked yourself, “Who is Young The Giant?” A rapidly up-and-coming indie band from Orange County, Young the Giant is not only an old favorite on Locals Only, but the band is fast on their way to becoming an international success.

Young the Giant has a slot at Lollapalooza in August, and a forthcoming international tour to support the release of their music in Europe, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

In March, the band won an OC Music Award for Best Song for their hit “My Body.” Michelle Piper from the OCMA’s got to sit down with lead singer Sameer Gadhia and discuss what the future holds for the burgeoning local band.

This tour in May will be like our first big introduction to Europe. But, in the States, we've been doing like a lot of writing and are looking forward to a lot of new material.
Before  Young The Giant played their Sold Out Local’s Only presented homecoming show at House of Blues Anaheim with artists like The Union Line, Strange Birds, and The Orange Effect, Michelle Piper sat down and talked to lead singer, Sameer Gadhia.

Piper asked Gadhia if Young The Giant is preparing a new record, to which the singer replied that the band is defintiely working on new material, but is more occupied with promoting themselves internationally:

Well, the album’s gone by in the United States…It’s been a couple months. Now everything is being released in the UK and Europe and Australia and Asia. It’s kind of like a delayed thing over there, so it’s kind of strange.

This tour in May will be like our first big introduction to Europe. But, in the States, we’ve been doing like a lot of writing and are looking forward to a lot of new material.

We’re planning on doing a headlining tour again in the fall of this year after all the festivals. And hopefully trying to incorporate some new songs that we’ve been working on because we always feel like it’s really important to be churning new material out. I think most definitely, sometimes people think we don't sound like an Orange County band, but they might just be confused because we don't look like we're from Orange County necessarily. But, we are really from here and are a direct product of it.

Gadhia then discussed what it’s like to grow up in the Orange County music scene and how being part of Orange County influences their music:

Well, we’ve always been a big part of the Orange County music scene from when we started…There’s just been a lot of influence…There’s like so much punk nature in Orange County.

We’re not like the punkiest of bands, but it fueled a lot of the energy in the lyricism and some of the melodies. A big offspin of Orange County indie music is from that big root of punk that has always existed.

The idea of not really caring because you have beauty all around you at all times. Sometimes that’s foolish, but I think that’s a big influence for us…Living at the beach had a lot to do with the writing process. How we viewed time; how we viewed ourselves.

I think most definitely, sometimes people think we don’t sound like an Orange County band, but they might just be confused because we don’t look like we’re from Orange County necessarily. But, we are really from here and are a direct product of it.

I’m pretty sure young the giant DID NOT play Coachella. 99.9% sure.

i was at Coachella, and would’ve definitely been at their set if they did.
