Red Bull Soap Box Derby Returns To Downtown Los Angeles May 21st

The King of Mexico and Psycho Mike navigate a turn at last year's Soapbox Race
You probably heard about last year’s Red Bull Soap Box Derby in Downtown LA. The size of the crowd was incredible. I heard rumors of 125,000 people packed up and down the streets but all I remember is that it was a sea of people and so much fun.
[Gallery] Red Bull Soap…In case you’re unfamiliar with the Derby, here’s the deal. Teams are formed at the most grass roots level. From sororities to frats to groups of co-workers and friends. Teams of non-professional racers like Psycho Mike, Dave and Omar apply to Red Bull. Basically anyone can get a group of buddies together and pitch their crazy concept. Red Bull reviews the team’s theme, plans and costumes, yes, costumes, and approves the them one by one.
Last year Mike, Dave, Omar and listener Anel formed KROQ’s team: The Summer Of Death. Each played the part of a dead celebrity who’d recently kicked the bucket.
This year, Psycho Mike has gone from racer to judge!

Dave and Mike taking a turn in Downtown LA
On May 21st, the Red Bull Soapbox Race will invade Grand Ave. and 5th Street in Downtown LA as racers are judged on speed, creativity and showmanship as they navigate the course, which includes a “razor-sharp” turn onto 5th Street.
Gates open at 11:00am, allowing spectators to explore the pit area, check out the soap boxes and meet the teams! The first race is at 1:00 pm and the finals will take place about 3:15pm, with an awards ceremony immediately following. Everyone is welcome and it’s totally FREE.
If you want to get away from the throngs of people, KROQ will be holding the official viewing party just down the block at Big Wangs, 801 South Grand Avenue. We’ll have big screens for everyone to watch the action, food, drinks, you name it. It’ll be good times.
