Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Four new movies are in theaters today, and my pick is Thor, but I’ll save it for last. Others opening this weekend are The Beaver, Jumping the Broom, and Something Borrowed.

**

The Beaver:

The Beaver opens in Limited Release. This stars Mel Gibson in his first project released since his meltdown. Jodie Foster directed this film about a troubled executive who finds a beaver hand-puppet, and it becomes his sole means of communicating between his family and colleagues. He’s so deeply troubled and depressed, he can only speak through the beaver hand-puppet. It becomes a persona to express his feelings.

You cannot deny that he’s a talented actor and I’m really actually looking forward to seeing this. Jodie Foster is also a star in this film. She plays his wife. Interesting premise. Great cast. Anton Yelchin is also in the film. It’s a dark, dark comedy, and I think it’s fascinating. I can’t wait.

Jumping the Broom:

This is about two African-American families getting together for a big wedding. Sabrina is from the upside of town, Jason is from the downtown side of town, and when these two families get together, it’s hilarity and chaos.

How is Tyler Perry not involved in this film?

Something Borrowed:

Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson star as two best friends who are both in love with the same man, Colin Egglesfield. they also have a best friend played by John Krasinski from the Office.

I bet they will learn a lot about love and life by the end of this film, and I bet friendship and love and trust and life and tampons and cookies and puppies and chocolate and appletinis.

My pick of the week:
Thor:

Chris Hemsworth stars as the god of thunder, son of Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins. He is banished from Asgard because of his ego, because of his pride. He has to learn some humility, so his dad, Odin, sends him to Earth, and there, he learns to be worthy of Mjöllnir, the hammer of Thor.

Great cast – Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Kat Dennings. Amazing cast, strong, strong script, and brilliantly directed by Kenneth Branagh, who is best known for his Shakespearean work, but this falls into his wheelhouse because the Asgard portions of the film are very Shakespearean and epic. He’s got basically Viking gods in space.

This film was shot in 2D but converted to 3D but looks great!
