My Coachella dream started at the KROQ Coachella House where I had to round out the reviews of the bands visiting during the day.

However, it turns out traffic was terrible, that ran long and once it was over I ran.  Not like when you run away from something, but run to something sort of like the ice cream truck.

I ran to Coachella, leaving more than half my belongings behind and racing home to the land of Coachella the place of my people.  On my way, I dropped my phone in water and when things seemed like they couldn’t get any worse I realized I left my Coachella plan back at the Coachella house.

I was going to have to wing it.  And it was the best decision I could have made.

Since my phone wouldn’t work I decided to head to the Main Stage just as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cee Lo Green[/lastfm] waltzed off stage during an encore performance of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.”

Rumors have it that the Main Stage had been having problems with everything from sound to the visuals and it finally took a toll on the “F**k You” singer who obviously said his very own “F**k You,” and ended his set then and there.  The band, however, played until the song ended.

However, other reports indicate that Cee Lo’s set was cut short and the mic was turned off because he started late.  As of the moment I am writing this, I’m not sure which is which, but either sucks.

Here is where I decided I needed food, drinks and a bathroom break.  Thinking I could take care of all of this in 15 minutes I mecca’d into the Beer Gardens and immediately made 10 new super drunk friends.

They tried to help me get my phone to work while [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lauryn Hill[/lastfm] played in the background.  These are the moments that make Coachella what it is.  Strangers coming together to share in the glorious experience of good music and friendship.

Here is where I made an executive decision, I couldn’t find my way, my schedule, a working phone, but I had friends and that’s what counted.  I stuck with them at the Main Stage for the end of Lauryn Hill or what I can remember of it at least.

In the break we shared more beers.  We were friends now.  Nothing mattered.  Theese people were my Coachella family.  We took a seat on the grass and waited for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Interpol[/lastfm] to take the stage.  I knew I hadn’t planned to see them, but things were changing at a rapid pace and I was going to make the best of it.

They played “Antics,” “Evil” and “Slow Hands,” and for not being the world’s biggest Interpol fan, how much I enjoyed them sort of startled me.  Was it the fact that the people I was now with really loved them and it was rubbing off on me?

I didn’t have much time to think about it because I there was more time needed for flirting and fun, and before I knew it my boys from the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Black Keys[/lastfm] were on the stage and they were rocking like only they could.

Since I’d waited throughout Interpol I had prime seating and experienced them as close as I ever have since I caught their act backstage at the 2010 Almost Acoustic Christmas.  The first song was barely audible as the sound messed up again and you could tell that both the crowd and the band were fed up one song in.

Luckily, they caught the error and they kicked things off with “Girl Is On My Mind,” “Your Touch,” and then “Everlasting Light,” and “Next Girl.”  The crowd went wild when they decided to play songs off Brothers and ended with the HBO television show “Hung” theme song “I’ll Be Your Man.”

After the Keys set ended I decided I could endure [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kings Of Leon[/lastfm] so that I could have prime seating for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chemical Brothers[/lastfm].  Again, even though I wasn’t huge on the band, the vibe of the crowd and the people I was with was so excellent that I enjoyed their set and especially “Sex On Fire.”  It’s amazing what happens in the crowd when that songs starts blaring across the field.

The lapse between Kings Of Leon and Chemical Brothers took forever.  The Chemical Brothers took the stage sometime after 12:15am and by then I was tired.  So, so tired. But then they played “Galvanized” and my exhaustion from the heat and stress of running all over the place just sort of went away.

Neon colored glow sticks shot into the sky and it was like an electric Christmas parade for all the people that believed in the magic of Coachella and it was perfect.  Simply perfect in that moment.  And I never wanted it to end.

Luckily there’s always night two, let’s all say a prayer that I make it there with a working phone, new friends, old friends and a plan.  Or not, cause everything falling apart seemed to work out perfectly for me.

  1. business says:

….Several artists and groups have already planned for elaborate theatrical components that will play off the huge stage all to be kept under wraps. Arcade Fire is planning something with Chris Milk who directed their interactive The Wilderness Downtown video Interpol is also planning something special that guitarist Daniel Kessler didnt want to reveal but teased Visually I think were presenting something that we havent done before. The main stage wont be the only one touched by The Creators Project. In one tent there will be a huge light installation in another there will be numerous spotlights that once entered will play the Spiritualized song Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating In Space the band wont actually be at Coachella however . This is taking performance to a whole new level where lighting and the visual experience is as powerful in some cases as the music said Deborah Conrad of Intel. The whole convergence isnt just about music she said.
