It’s hard to imagine those handsome New York new wave band, Interpol, stepping out into the blistering Coachella heat to do an interview–especially since they are always bedecked in arty, sophisticated black attire.
Daniel Kessler from Interpol braved the heat to talk to our lovely Nicole Alvarez about their newest self-titled album, the super-sexy reactions to the album, and how handsome Daniel looked.
The girls at KROQ always love a dashing musician in black.
Nicole Alvarez: “When did you tap into that sound…The sound that’s so quintessentially Interpol?”
Daniel: “I think we’ve always had our sound. We’ve never really thought about what kind of sound we wanted to have. When we actually started playing as a band, that’s actually the sound that came out. I think it’s just inherent in us…We never really had a master plan about the direction that we wanted to go in.”
N: “I was always intrigued that you didn’t have a chief songwriter. You guys always collaborated. I’m assuming at time it’s got to be difficult to get all your different kinds of emotions and ideas to gel. Is it? Or do you prefer that process?”
D: “Democracies are difficult. But you know that at the end of the day…you never know where the influence is going to come from. One person can influence the other and the other person can influence the other guy. The end result is all something a bit new. Unexpected.
N: “It’s a beautiful relationship.”
D: “It’s a complicated one.”
N: “All the great ones are. Now this last album, you self-titled. Why’d you decide to do that?”
D: It felt like something different to do a 4th record to self-title and we felt like the music kind of spoke for itself. It’s a pretty cool record and we didn’t feel like it needed to have a title…So we kind of like the minimal approach of it…Letting the music speak for itself.”
N: “What was different for the recording process for this record?…What did you learn about yourself on this album?”
D: “You have quite a bit of experience, you have an idea of what you want to accomplish. I think songwriting wise, we had an idea of what we wanted to accomplish in our process.”
“When we have an idea you know exatly how to achieve it well… by the time, you are doing a fourth record, you know exactly what you want to achieve.”
