The [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Foo Fighters[/lastfm]’ latest album, Wasting Light, is in stores today, and by the way my DVR has been filling up with all-things-Foo-Fighters, it’s an understatement to say that I’m excited!

Following his appearance on the Kevin & Bean show last week, Dave Grohl stopped by the show again to talk about the new album, Wasting Light. For those who were able to catch the Foo Fighters: Back and Forth documentary, you know that this album was recorded with Butch Vig on analog tape (no computers), and in Grohl’s garage in Encino.

Sixteen years and seven studio albums into their career, the Foo Fighters bring us Wasting Light - an album that Grohl thinks is the best they’ve ever made.

[pullquote quote=”Every time we make a record it’s kind of a response to the one that came before it.”]”I feel like, at this point, every time we make a record it’s kind of a response to the one that came before it. The last couple records, we’ve really experimented with different instrumentation and dynamic. We went there with the piano and we went there with the string section and we went there with the mandolin. All of those things I think were necessary to keep the band going and just to experiment with things we haven’t done before.

“But this time it felt like, ok, we’re making the record with Butch Vig. Butch Vig is a genius producer, but he’s really great at making huge rock records […] He helps you simplify it so it becomes a bigger, better version of the song […] I listen to the record and it just sounds like the last 16 years to me.”

One question that many have had is about the song title “Arlandria.” Is it an ex-girlfriend? A made up word? A place? It’s actually the town in Virginia where Grohl grew up, between Arlington and Alexandria. It’s a place where he can go back to, to just get away and feel like himself. Though he’s down to earth person, he said that he understands how people can get swept up by the rock star lifestyle and lose themselves in it.

We all know the feeling that we get when we’re watching a band play live, and how the emotion in the music and the environment just overtakes us and gives us the intense chills and a huge smile. It’s a feeling we want to never end!

Hearing Dave Grohl talk about still getting goosebumps while being onstage and looking out at a packed house is such a cool things to hear! The fact that someone can be so far along in their musical career and still have that passion for their art is truly inspiring!

I’ve always considered him to be “our generation’s rock star,” and this next step in the Foo Fighters’ timeline has done nothing to diminish that in the least. From the little string of secret LA club shows, to including a piece of the original analog tape in the packaging of Wasting Light, I can’t wait to see what the Foos do next.

My fingers are crossed for a Weenie Roast appearance, but they don’t tell me anything in this place, so my guess is as good as yours.
