As Brooklyn’s TV on the Radio gear up for the release of their album Nine Types of Light the group has been hit with a major setback. They released a statement on their website stating Gerard Smith, the band’s bassist and keyboardist, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is already undergoing treatment. He will be unable to participate in the upcoming tour.
The band wrote, “…Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care. Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard’s legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem.”
The band has announced that they will release the upcoming album, Nine Types of Light, as planned via Interscope on April 12 and will be heading out on tour this spring as planned. You can download a copy of their newest single, “Caffeinated Consciousness” by joining the band’s mailing list above.
TV on the Radio will also headline AOL Music and Spinner’s SXSW showcase Thursday, March 17 at Austin’s famed Stubb’s Bar-B-Q, before playing a string of US dates this April.
