Almost Acoustic Christmas: Photos, recaps, interviews, and more!

mike couch385x240 Who Is Mike Catherwood And Why Is He Dancing With The Stars?

That’s what millions of Americans are asking themselves. The cast of Dancing with the Stars Season 12 was just announced during The Bachelor. Among the list of well-known celebrity castmembers is one not-so widely known “Psycho” Mike Catherwood.

Chances are, unless you’re a KROQ or Loveline fan, you have no clue who this Catherwood guy is.

So, who is he and why was he cast on one of America’s most beloved and highly ranked prime-time shows?

Starting March 12th, Mike will dance against the following stars:

  • Kirstie Alley
  • Kendra Wilkinson
  • Wendy Williams
  • Chris Jericho
  • Lil’ Romeo
  • Disney star Chelsea Kane
  • Pittsburgh Steelers’ Hines Ward
  • Ralph Macchio
  • Sugar Ray Leonard
  • Petra Nemcova

Like Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, Carson Daly, Kennedy and Matt “Money” Smith, Mike Catherwood is yet another talented soul smart enough to utilize KROQ and The Kevin & Bean Show to launch a career.

We’ll gloss over the fact that he’s a Rutgers grad and an incredibly snappy dresser. But, Mike is not your ordinary Kevin & Bean lackey.

After a battle with drugs and alcohol, Mike not only turned his life around, but decided to change directions and pursue his dreams of rock n roll. What better place to start than the biggest alt-rock station in the country? Unfortunately, at radio, everyone starts at the bottom. In 2003 Mike interviewed for and landed a job as a KROQ promotions assistant.

A year into his job as promotions assistant, Mike learned of a job opening on The Kevin & Bean Show for a board-op. Despite a hilariously horrible interview, Kevin & Bean saw something special in him and brought him aboard.

Flash forward to 2010, Mike not only proved himself a true radio host, but he landed the co-host position on the nationally syndicated Loveline Show opposite Dr. Drew. He now uses some of his greatest flaws for good. Learning from his issues with substance abuse, he’s able to dole out solid and entertaining advice that the listeners trust.

Mike recently won a contest that had him co-host Live with Regis & Kelly for a day. Out of hundreds of DJs, Mike chosen to be flown to New York to sit in an entire episode with Kelly Ripa. This turned out to be a pivotal moment in his career.

Mike sat down with me and answered a few questions, that us, his friends and fellow employees wanted to know.

Were you surprised when you found out you’d been asked to join the cast of Dancing With The Stars?

I wasn’t that surprised when I found out because you get offered the gig. It’s been months of people saying “Hey would you be interested in doing it.”

This stemmed from the Regis & Kelly fill-in, right?

Totally, totally. It’s ridiculous to even include me now, post Regis & Kelly, to include me in a show called Dancing with the Stars cause I’m gonna be the least well known dude on there. Radio’s like the lowest rung of the entertainment industry and I’m like not even in the middle of that rung. So, it sucks, but it doesn’t matter cause it’ll be fun and I get to dance, which is what I do (he says with a chuckle).

So, between leaving Regis & Kelly and getting on the plane at JFK, you got a call from who? I hear that was a big moment.

During the taping of Live with Regis & Kelly, my people, which is crazy, I know, I have representation, but they got calls from numerous people… like during the taping, like twenty minutes into the show. They were like, “Hey who is this guy?” So I was blown away. I couldn’t believe how flattering that was.

It seemed like once the show got going there was actual interest sparked, which is cool you know. It’s crazy to see what can happen when you’re exposed to an utterly completely opposite demographic, which is what the show was. Not only is it watched by a lot of people which is cool, and great from a career aspect but it’s the absolute opposite demographic that I reach with Loveline or Kevin & Bean.

Fairly quickly, you received an offer from Dancing with the Stars.

About the week after, my agent called and said you gotta go meet with this lady regarding ABC Disney stuff, and I’d been to that building before for another show that I did that actually get picked up but never made it to air. So, I got there, sat down and there were some faces in the room that I recognized and then they asked me and I was like “I don’t think so.” Not because it’s embarrassing or because I can’t dance, which I can’t, but because I’m so not a celebrity. Like, I would be that guy.

Every single year when they announce the cast for Dancing with the Stars, we sit here at Kevin & Bean and go “Who’s that guy?” and now I’m gonna be that guy this year. But then I thought about it and I said so what. Most people in life cower when stuff comes their way that they’re not accustomed to doing or seems intimidating or makes them nervous so I just had to step up and agree to do it.

PAGE 3 How does Mike feel about being the unknown guy?

You think the average person in Missouri will poke fun and say “who’s that guy?”

I’m more concerned with the average folk than the other DJs… Cause it’s like the other DJs, of course they’re going to hate. “I’m sluggin’ away at whatever radio show I do and this guy gets to be on the biggest television show on the planet.” They deem it Dancing with the Stars and there will be legit heavy hitters on the show, and they’re gonna get down to me and everybody’s gonna be, you know, who’s this guy?

They asked me originally, and I said, can I sleep on it? I went home and I thought, Carolla did it, had fun with it, understood what the show was about, didn’t take himself too seriously, it was awesome. Jeffrey Ross, same thing. Steve-O, called Steve-O up and asked his opinion.

What did he say?

He said it would be the greatest thing in the world for me.

What was his reasoning?

He was off the map. After he got clean, he went out of his way to lay low. And then he comes back and does this show that again, introduces him to a whole new audience. I had personal friends, my buddy’s girlfriend that had no idea that Jackass even existed but she fell in love with Steve-O through Dancing with the Stars.

No one really gives a sh*t about whether or not I’m going to be a good dancer. It gives you the ability to let your personality shine through and that’s all I can hope to do. Cause Lord knows I’m not going to go in there and take myself too seriously. I’ve never done that my entire life, why should I start now?

Mike as The Situtation

You’ve only dabbled in a little TV now – E!, Game Show Network stuff etc. What is the single biggest difference between radio and TV?

I host a pretty well known pretty big show. I’m the host of a show that’s heard coast to coast. Yet, I still get treated like a sh*tbag. You know what I mean? In radio it doesn’t matter if you’re big time or not. Everybody clowns on you and it has a blue-collar ethic to it, which is one of the reasons why I love it, but you don’t feel big time. Even if you are big time in radio, like Kevin & bean get clowned just like everybody else in radio and they’re f*ckin’ studs!

The one thing I noticed about doing television shows, you could be hosting a bootleg-ass cable show in the middle of nowhere and people call you Mr. Catherwood and there’s a full food spread and you get paid good money and there’s nice fresh coffee… You could be the be the host of a big time radio show and no one is nice to you and no one treats you like a star.

How much time is this going to take out of your schedule?

It’s a six or seven day-a-week full-on demanding schedule. I couldn’t believe how much they have you doing. Practice every day for six to seven hours plus the live shoots. It’s ridiculous, like totally ridiculous.

PAGE 4 Does this mean he’s leaving The Kevin & Bean Show?

mike chucks pose Who Is Mike Catherwood And Why Is He Dancing With The Stars?

What’s this going to mean for your role on The Kevin & Bean Show?

I will not be on The Kevin & Bean Show during the time the I’m on Dancing with the Stars, however long that may be. I have call times at 6am and it goes all night. What happens after that? I don’t know.

So, at this moment, you’re still part of the show but you’re on hiatus?

I guess so, yeah. I guess that’s what you can call it.

Ralph took a month off to shoot a movie and he was welcomed back with open arms.

Yeah, but Ralph’s Ralph and I’m me.

But honestly, Kevin & Bean, as much fun as they make of me on the air and as much as they can come off as callus dudes, they couldn’t be more supportive. You couldn’t find two more supportive bosses. They encourage all of us. And it shows with all of the people that have come through this show and have gone on to have great success in the entertainment industry. They’re more than happy to take someone and use The Kevin & Bean Show as a way to better people’s careers. That’s for sure. They’re not insecure dudes and they’re all about supporting other people.

Loveline airs live Sunday through Thursday nights via the Westwood One Radio Network.

Mike’s no fun because he does not drink. He’s too much of a straight shooter when it comes to alcohol. Go have a drink, loosen up and enjoy your fame.
