Even though the GRAMMY Awards have been a huge part of American culture for almost half a century, most people don’t know what an actual GRAMMY is and how and when the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. was formed.

“GRAMMY” is short for “Gramophone” and the actual GRAMMY Awards given out each year are modeled after this record player. The GRAMMY Awards are given by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. which was formed in 1957.

“In the beginning The Recording Academy owed its survival to members who donated long hours to the emerging professional association. The first GRAMMY Awards were held in 1959 in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton.

Who has won the most GRAMMYs? Classical conductor Georg Solti, who died in 1997, holds the record at 31. For many years the GRAMMY Awards in the classical music categories were never taken seriously because everyone just assumed that Solti would win because he was such a giant among conductors.

Youngest GRAMMY Award Winner: Leann Rimes was only 14 years old when she won her first GRAMMY and she was the first country artist to win the Best New Artist category.

Most GRAMMYs Awarded to a Band: U2 has received 22 GRAMMY Awards over the course of their career, and they may even win more in the future.

Most GRAMMYs Awarded In a Single Night: Michael Jackson was the first to do it in 1984 when he won 8 GRAMMYs that night. Santana tied the record in 2000 by also receiving 8 awards.

Most GRAMMYs Awarded to a Solo Male Artist: Stevie Wonder won 22 GRAMMYs over the course of his career.

Most GRAMMYs Awarded to a Solo Female Artist: Alison Krauss has won 26 GRAMMYs as a solo artist, collaborator with Union Station and producer.
