In this week’s Movie Beat, I review Cedar Rapids, Gnomeo & Juliet, The Eagle, Just Go With It, and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
This movie was a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s a comedy starring El Helms from The Office, also co-starring Anne Heche, John C. Reilly, and Rob Corddry.
Ed Helms plays a small time insurance salesman from Cedar Rapids, IA, who goes to an annual insurance convention. he’s sort of a virgin to these events, and he finds himself under the wing of three convention veterans who show him how to get hammered and do all kinds of wildly inappropriate things while they’re staying at the hotel for the convention.
This is in limited release, but it definitely looks worth seeking out in your area.
Gnomeo & Juliet:
For the kids, and for the kid in all of us really, Gnomeo & Juliet. See, it’s about garden gnomes, so it’s Gnomeo and Juliet. They’re in love. The two garden gnomes are in love. So it’s Gnomeo and Juliet. Will they be able to find love amongst the world of pink lawn flamingos and other things that stand in the way of their love, like Romeo and Juliet? But it’s not Romeo and Juliet – it’s Gnomeo and Juliet!
When did they start making movies out of our “Would You Like To Take That Back” file? When did that happen? When did that get the big budget treatment? It sounds like something Mike would say in the back of the room, and everyone would say “take that back!” but now they make a movie out of it instead.
Channing Tatum is a Roman warrior who’s lost his father’s special golden eagle, so he’s got to go out on the other side of the wall to the no-man’s land to recapture the eagle so that his father’s pride will be restored and the Roman Empire will be strong because they will take back the eagle!
Here’s the thing about period-films, especially things that take place in Ancient Rome and the like – leave it to the Brits. Really. They really pull that stuff off best. You can watch Russell Crowe as Gladiator, but Channing Tatum comes out, and he’s trying to be all Roman and ancient and whatnot, and he doesn’t quite pull it off.
Jut Go With It:
Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston play two good friends whose relationship and friendship is put to the test when Adam gets busted for pretending to be married so he can pick up girls.
He falls in love with Brooklyn Decker, this girls that he tries to pick up, when she finds the wedding ring, he has to concoct this crazy story where he’s now getting divorced so he can keep Brooklyn Decker, and he asks Jennifer Aniston to play his soon-to-be ex-wife. Then he adds to the chaos by saying they have kids, so he’s got to take Jennifer Aniston’s kids and pretend they’re his so that Brooklyn Decker doesn’t find out that he’s single and uses the wedding ring to try to have sex. See??? It happens all the time!
It’s about as believable as the fact that Brooklyn Decker would sleep with a guy that looks like Adam Sandler. Only in the movies.
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never:
Justin Bieber is a big moe! Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is the name of the documentary that follows him around. It documents his struggle from unknown 15 year old trying to be a musician to known 15 year old who was on YouTube and got signed to a record deal by Usher. It follows that entire journey in one motion picture!
