The end of an era has come: The White Stripes are unplugging the guitar and stripping the drum kit.

In an official statement released by Jack and Meg White, the power duo announced that the band won’t be getting back together. While fans of The White Stripes have been holding on to the glimmer of hope that Jack let slip in last November’s Vanity Fair, speculation was interrupted this morning:

“[the] band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.”

From Jack White’s record company, Third Man Records, comes the statement:

The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.

Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and incredible career.

Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.

Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly.

With that in mind the band have this to say:

The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want.
Jack & Meg
“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong
to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White
The White Stripes

No worries. We’ll see them again in when they get back together on the first of many reunion tours. Hey, if Pixies can do it and look at you in the eye, anybody can do it. Money talks baby!

i can respect the intent of their actions, and though it is sad to see them go, at least they didnt take it to the extreme like my beloved Kurt did. “It’s better to burn out than to fade away.”

This was the band that gave me hope that modern day rock music still exists, and that all you need to do look in the right places. Thank you for all of the years of great music.

that’s a shame, definitely one of the most memorable and influential bands of the 00s. i don’t think a lot of people give them the enormous credit they deserve for coming out of nowhere releasing White Blood Cells on an obscure indie label and then skyrocketing in popularity. they along with the strokes were a huge part of the garage rock and neo-post punk revivals and helping the music industry realize that maybe rock artists besides pop punk, post grunge, and nu metal bands can be marketed to the mainstream. would the yeah yeah yeahs, interpol, franz ferdinand, the killers, the black keys, and others have been given the same chances to thrive without the white stripes? we’ll never know for sure

I could never get into this band, but you had to respect them.
