Decades after their first album,The Ramones finally get their justice served. At the 53rd annual Grammy awards that will be held in February of next year, The Ramones will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, not only is this award very special, but what makes it more special is the fact that they never received a Grammy award while they were still together.

I don’t know about you guys, but this gives me more of a reason to watch the Grammy’s, to be able to see the remaining band members on stage one more time, and I can’t wait to see what kind of tribute to The Ramones they have in store for us.

In 2002 The Ramones were finally inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, where Dee Dee Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Tommy Ramone, and Marky Ramone were on stage together again to receive the award. A year before Joey died of cancer, 2 months after the induction into the Rock ‘n Roll HOF, Dee Dee died of an overdose, and in 2004 Johnny passed away of cancer himself. The two surviving members, Tommy and Marky, will accept the award on behalf of all the Ramones.

From their humble New York beginnings, the Ramones helped pioneer punk rock in the 1970s with such fast-paced songs as “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker.”

Said Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, “It is a great honor to recognize and celebrate such a distinguished and dynamic group of honorees. Their legendary work has left a lasting impression and will continue to influence generations to come.”

Legendary work indeed, their music is still on regular rotation here at KROQ, and The Ramones pave the way for young kids getting into punk rock all around. The first punk rock album I got was from The Ramones, and I proclaim myself the #1 Ramones fan. Do you remember rock n roll radio? C’mon, let’s rock n roll with the Ramones! Punk died when Joey died. Punk died when Dee Dee died. Punk died when Johnny died.

It would have been nice for “The Academy” to honor the band when they were actually alive. No one gave this band the respect they deserved when they were still alive. I still kick myself for skipping Lollapalooza 96.
