Sometimes, you forget how impressively large the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros posse actually is. However, while 11 people can spread out quite leisurely on an amphitheater stage, as they did in their magnetic opening set tonight, it’s bit trickier to fit them in small spaces like KROQ’s narrow backstage stage.
But there they sat, mid-concert, sharing headphones, some sitting, some standing, some splayed out on the floor, chatting charmingly with Kat, like a close-knit and happy go lucky family they portray onstage. In fact, perhaps especially in a tight space, their camaraderie and infectious good spirit radiates like it does in their jangling, ebullient gypsy rock.
News-worthy facts? The band flew down all the way from Louisiana to partake in this year’s Acoustic Christmas. Down South, they’ve been busy recording a new album (*insert tambourine shake and enthusiastic whistle here,*) and are rumored to be making good progress. Based on tonight’s performance and our general ardor for their infectious, sing-a-long-style tunes, we can’t hardly for them to come home and release it.
