what im thankful for Top 10 Bands Im Thankful For

Thanksgiving is a great holiday for almost everyone, unless you don’t like turkey and had no childhood. Its a time for food, family, fun, and giving thanks. One of the many things I’m thankful for is music, and so I’ve decided to share my top 10 list of bands that I’m thankful for.

10. At the Drive-In

I know they’re broken up, but I love this band and the subsequent bands that formed because of the break-up. I only wish I could of seen them perform live, they play with such a passion and adrenaline.

At the Drive-In – “Pattern Against User”

At the Drive-In – “One Armed Scissor”

9. Thrice

Thrice is a band I grew up with and started listening to around seven years ago.Listening to them while I’ve grown up has been a real treat because I got to witness their evolution as a band first-hand.

Thrice – “All the World Is Mad”

Thrice – “The Artist in the Ambulance”

8. Silversun Pickups

The music these guys put out is just flowing with creativity. Add in Brian’s unique vocals and the result is music I simply just can’t get enough of.

Silversun Pickups – “Little Lover’s So Polite”

Silversun Pickups – “Catch and Release”

7. Paramore

Paramore is an unbelievable band, I love the fact they’re sound is so varied. They can do a song that makes you want to just rock out or they can do a soothing ballad.

Paramore – “Emergency”

Paramore – “Let the Flames Begin”
trans Top 10 Bands Im Thankful For

6. Arctic Monkeys

The songs these guys write are really catchy, yet they rock so hard. The riffs, bass, drums, and vocals have a great harmony that result in awesome music.

Arctic Monkeys – “Teddy Picker”

Arctic Monkeys – “Brianstorm”

5. The Strokes

They rock. I’m not sure how else I can put it but that. You know how with some of your favorite albums that there’s a few songs you don’t like? The Strokes broke that trend for me.

The Strokes – “Heart In A Cage”

The Strokes – “Reptilia”

4. Radiohead

I love Radiohead, the talent and vision to always put out great music is a very impressive feat. My favorite thing about them has to be the fact that they are one of the few bands that you can connect with others on regardless of their tastes or age.

Radiohead - “Idioteque”

Radiohead – “15 Step”

3. Brand New

My brother introduced me to this band over seven years ago and I’ve been listening to them ever since. They have such a unique sound that has evolved so much since the bands creation, yet not once have I ever felt the music didn’t represent them.

Brand New – “Jesus Christ”

Brand New – “The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows”

2. Metric

I only discovered Metric a little over a year now, and I absolutely adore them. Their music is a unique mix of soothing rhythms and melodies along with fantastic vocals by the beautiful Emily Haines. I saw them earlier in the year at the Hollywood Palladium and I was not disappointed. They play with a lot of energy and save numerous cool things only for their live performances.

Metric – “Gimme Sympathy”

Metric – “Gold Guns Girls”

1. Muse

Muse became my musical soul mate over five years ago when I first heard “Stockholm Syndrome” off their album Absolution. As soon as I finished listening to it, I rushed to get any and all music they’d ever released. Most of you are aware of Muse and their new album, but far fewer of you know about their earlier albums which are just absolute musical ecstasy. Do yourself a favor and check out their older stuff. And one last thing, seeing them live is an absolute must because they’re performance will put you in a state of euphoria you’ve never experienced before.

Muse – “Stockholm Syndrome”

Muse – “New Born”

So, you’ve seen the bands I’m thankful for, which bands are you thankful for?

Too much great music over KROQ’s lifespan to pick only ten bands to be thankful for, so I broke it up into three decades…

KROQ of the 80s:
U2, Depeche Mode, Oingo Boingo, The Cure, R.E.M., New Order, INXS, Tears For Fears, Billy Idol, Devo.

KROQ of the 90s:
U2, Depeche Mode, Boingo, Nine Inch Nails, Social Distortion, Offspring, Foo Fighters, Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Garbage.

KROQ of the 00s:
U2, Nine Inch Nails, Social Distortion, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay, Killers, Muse, Interpol, Linkin Park.

I wasn’t quite sure in which decade to put Jane’s Addiction and The Chemical Brothers, but they should be included as well. I’ve (thankfully) been able to see all the bands I listed perform live – from INXS (only once) to U2 (42 times).

In case Sluggo reads this: I really only like three bands: Primus, Elastica and The Pixies.

In case Kevin Ryder reads this: I also dislike the Beatles.

In case Stryker reads this: I don’t listen to music anymore, all I do is watch “Airplane” and “Nation Lampoon’s Vacation” all day.

In case Lisa (Ass) Worden reads this: Play more U2.

In case Kevin Weatherly reads this: Quit it with the 80s metal!

In case my parole officer reads this: I swear I’ll check in with you tomorrow!

Some of the bands that I am definitely thankful for include, but are not restricted to, Weezer, blink-182, Depeche Mode, The Killers, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, and Anberlin (in no particular order). But my absolute favorite of all is Muse (!) and I agree with Adam 100%. Many people know about Uprising and Resistance, but they haven’t been introduced to songs like Bliss, Plug in Baby, Cave, Map of the Problematique, and Citizen Erased. Trust me, their old songs are just as awesome, if not better, than their latest. My advice is that you check out their older stuff. If you like it, great! If not, then that’s also fine. But honestly, I think you won’t be disappointed.

Could say your missing bands but that doesn’t matter. All that matters is Muse. Muse is the best band of the past 20 years. They are incredible and there live shows are even more incredible. Most U.S. fans only know of Resistance and black holes and revelation. BH&R may be good but resistance is crap. But their first 3 albums are by far their best albums, especially Origin of Symmetry and Absolution are Albums for a lifetime.
