World Premiere: Social Distortion “Machine Gun Blues”

Social Distortion is a band that other bands look up to. They have never wavered or changed their sound to “fit in” or sell more records. For over two decades, these men have produced music that they believe in. And, for this, they’ve won over thousands of fans.
What other band can you think of that can sell out more than twenty consecutive dates at a single venue?
A few moments ago Mike Ness hung up the phone with KROQ’s Stryker. Together, they world-premiered “Machine Gun Blues,” the first single from the band’s forthcoming release which is entitled Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes. Hard Times is their seventh studio album and first release in over six years. And, if you’re a fan, you know this album can’t come quickly enough.
Beginning November 16th, you can download “Machine Gun Blues” via iTunes. But you can hear it here now!

” Mike Ness
After years of working with various producers in the studio, Mike Ness took this duty for the first time with their new album. Earlier this year, the band entered a Burbank studio where they recorded for the next several months–in-between spring and summer tour dates which included Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. In early October, the band wrapped up recording before heading out for their fall US tour. Ness explained to Stryker how they are a “touring band” and how recording wasn’t something that was immediately on the agenda because of time pressures. For the sake of the art, this was inevitably a good thing:
“The record only took 4 months to make; we’re a touring band…we’ve been touring all over the world the last 6 years. The thing is– if you want to make a record you have to stop touring. I didn’t want that much time to go by, but what can you say…I didn’t have these ideas yet. I didn’t know that I would have had them two years ago.”
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Ness explains. “I love being on that side of the board. Even though I’ve co-produced all of our records, I always was there for everything. It just came to a point where I was like ‘I think I want to try this, I want to do this ourselves.’ By being at the helm this time allowed so much more focus for me to the fine details of every aspect of it, whether it was performances, or tones, or arrangements, backing vocals….everything.”
Bruce Springsteen has “been a fan of Social Distortion for a long, long time,” Guitar World has ranked Mike Ness as one of the coolest guitarists of all time. Stryker wanted to know how Social Distortion maintained all this prestige without losing their underground cred. While Mike Ness didn’t know the exact answer to this, he is definitely grateful:
“ I have learned some lessons along the way and that's to always push myself...I can do it better, I can do it better...I'm a perfectionist, you know?” Mike Ness
“I don’t know, dude. I wish I knew. If I knew, I’d be able to bottle it, sell it and market it. We are very fortunate…I see kids bringing their parents to shows and parents bringing their kids to shows…ours fans are very loyal…word-of-mouth and radio is still the most powerful form of communication for us…our live shows are still what we take our pride in…people go home and send it to their cousin in Chicago and say, ‘When they come to your town, you have to go.’”
With the release of Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, Social Distortion has further cemented themselves as one of the great rock bands of all time. Ness’ constant strive for perfection is probably one of the main factors: “It was tough being my own boss, but I have learned some lessons along the way and that’s to always push myself…I can do it better, I can do it better…I’m a perfectionist, you know?”

- Gimme The Sweet And Lowdown
- Diamond In The Rough

Wait until you hear “Can’t take it with you” from the new CD. It is one of the best songs they have ever done. I have heard it live several times. On the level of Bad Luck, or Highway 101. New single is super good. Can’t take it with you is about 3 notches or more higher if you can believe it!!

I was a huge punk fan in my teens and early twenties, and while I lost interest in the likes of Pennywise, Rancid, Minor Threat, Bad Religion (their old sh.t is still great), etc., Social D’s music still is still relevant & resonates with what I experience as an adult. Credit Mr. Ness for being an awesome song writer. They should get Volbeat to open for them on future tours.

November 17, 2010 10:36 am
Ya… I find that I really relate to songs about 1930′s gangsters as an adult as well. This new song is pretty mediocre in all honesty. Not their best or worst… kinda formulaic with pretty weak lyrical content.

November 9, 2010 10:12 am
This is the only sound i need in this life man…pure, simple and real…heartfelt music, the album for any old timer is like a reason to go on fighting in this life…for all the new fans i just hope they realise that getting a skeli tat is not what makes a social d. fan…perhaps they were not there from the beginning, at least stay true the end of this ride..i know i will.

I must wonder if it’s just the quality of the rip, but this sounds more like a demo vs. a polished/finished track. Regardless, like everything Social D puts out – this is a great jam.

November 9, 2010 6:29 pm
The best thing about SxDx is having “grown up” with them. People who say the new stuff is better than the old stuff weren’t in their teens singing MOral Threat or Mommy’s Little Monster. As our worlds have changed (how often do they “beat us up when we’re alone at 40?) Mike and the guys have made music that changed with us (and them). These guys are truly the fabld “soundtrack of my life”. Keep up the good work guys. You got me through many beer filled nights at 16 and it amazes me I can play the new tunes for my 4 yr old!

Well I’m a gangster in 1934
Junkies, winos, pimps and whores
And only men, women and kids must get out of the way
I just left a town, took all their loot
Bought a pink carnation and a pinstriped suit
A hot rod V-8 Ford and some two-tone shades
And I’m already gone
I’m like a pool of blood and sorrow
I’ve got the machine gun blues
I’ll be outta here before the break of dawn
Hit the highway, smoke a big cigar
Gotta stop and bury the cash, then get some more
There’s only one thing on my mind
Let’s make it across that old state line
Well I’m a hail of avenging bullets were meant for me
And I’m already gone
I’m like a path of pure destruction, I’ve got the machine gun blues
Already gone
My life will soon be through, I’ve got the machine gun blues
I’m public enemy number one
I’m sorry for the things I’ve done
If indeed we should cross paths, it’s nothing personal
And I’m already gone
I’m like a trail of devastation, I’ve got the machine gun blues
Already gone
My life will soon be through, I’ve got the machine gun blues

when stryker asked mike what has made social d so famous but still kept their underground credit. i think we all know the answer to that!! mike sings from the heart. he says what he feels and doesnt give a shit what anybody thinks.! he’s a leader. just like he sings he wasn’t born to follow! this new song is awesome. just imagine yourself in 1934 seeing mike in a v8 ford. i could see it now!

I’ve been a fan for years, seen them 3 times in the last year , last show being HOB in Atlantic City. They are one of the best bands to see LIVE. MG Blues is a good song, but Alone and Forsaken and Can’t Take It With You are gonna be the highlights of this disc. It is difficult to think of a SD song – and say that song sux. All are pretty damn good- many are fukin awesome. See them live, take the kids.

November 12, 2010 7:30 am
Can they get any better? I mean really. They have matured so much since the studio vid of “under my thumb”. Every morning I wake up and put on SXDX to start the day. 30 years and still going strong. Unbelievable.

Hey this is Robert from Denver, long time fan and listener of Social D, and I guess they can say they never changed there sound to fit others ideas (i.e. “Into The Unknown”), thanks for the artistic integrity and you give honour to the craft, as well as build bridges for cross generational communication as my father was also a fan before me.

I absolutly love Social Distortion…I have listened to them and Mike Ness since 1983…My kids have grown up listening to this band and they still listen to Social Distortion…we don’t miss a concert when it comes to a city near us which is Saskatoon for us…so there it is, myself (49)years old, my children(27yrs) and (24) and their spouses, we all take the concerts in together and have a great time and a family gathering at the same time, and now that I have a grandchild, well, I don’t see why he won’t be coming along tooo eventually…LOL I have to say, Machine gun blues is just another one of my favourite songs…way tooo many to even list…thanks for the great music that just keeps on and on..I am so excited about the new cd coming out…I just can not wait much longer…!!!!!
