KROQ Epicenter Twenty-Ten: Thirty Seconds to Mars

Rock star, famous actor, gorgeous sex symbol: Jared Leto is the teen dream. This man knows how to entertain (and make girls scream). And that’s not to discredit the star power of the rest of the members of Thirty Seconds To Mars.

Jared’s brother Shannon Leto was a veritable animal on the drum set and Tomo Miličević bit into some sick power chords. It’s evident that this is neither a hobby amongst brothers, nor an exploitative vie for more fame on Jared’s part. This is pure, passionate performance.

A purple twilight began to set in on the sun-burnt audience and girls began to push themselves up towards the stage. Backstage was filling up in what looked like a scene from our hypothetical movie called “Attack of The Killer Groupies.” Amazing taiko drummers took the stage with Shannon, setting the tone of the set as something sexy, rhythmic, and luscious.

Young women in their denim booty shorts, torn up band tees, and botoxed lips screeched “Hey, hey! Wave at him! He’s facing us now!” The “he” in question was obviously Jared Leto. Wearing a white leather jacket, red fingerless gloves, black skinny jeans, with a bleached blonde mullet, Jared is skinnier than ever but wearing a consummate smile.

This wasn’t just a concert; this was a theatrical performance. Jared has a command over the audience that we have never seen from any musician. He threw out bottles of water to the thirsty audience, engaged them in shouting competitions, pointed out specific fans, and even took a fire hose in between his legs and sprayed down the audience (that’s what she said.)

Of course the performance wasn’t only about a crush-worthy celeb squirting girls with his long hose; Thirty Seconds to Mars are amazing musicians performing songs like “The Kill,” “Night of The Hunter,” “This is War,” and “Attack” with flawless execution. It sometimes seems like unmentionable musicians are hard pressed to be enthusiastic about their performances but Thirty Seconds to Mars seemed to be having the best times of their lives.

Jared even said to the audience as a sort of mantra, “Our mission is to make sure you have the best time of your f**king life.” His level of engagement with the audience made everyone feel as if he was singing specifically to them which is the hallmark of having that “X” factor. And the most heartwarming part of it all, is that every time Jared turned away from the audience, he smiled. He obviously loves his fans.

The show ended the most epic way possible: Thirty Seconds to Mars grabbed the groupies on the side stage and lifted some of the audience members up so that they could sing with them. Then they washed the audience with purple light as they threw out giant white balls. The purple of the lights matched the previous purple of the twilight and the taiko drummers rejoined Thirty Seconds To Mars onstage.

Everything had come full circle. And for a split second, every single person in the audience believed that this moment was made for them which is “such a beautiful lie to believe in.”

They were absolutely amazing on Sunday! I was there the whole day, and they were by far the best! Although, that may be a bit biased, considering they are my favorite band :P

“Teen dream” my ass. I’m a 35 year old woman and have loved 30 STM since their first album. Jared is hands down the sexiest man on the face of the planet. They are an amazing band and there is NOBODY that can rock a show like Mars!

Not only for the teens. I’m 44 and a 30STM mum and proud of it. I saw them in concert in Melbourne and still on a high what an awesome show. Jared is definetely the hottest man on the planet and Mars. Can’t wait to see them at SOUNDWAVE. Totally agree with you Rebecca.

For one, I’m kind of appalled at the fact that Tomo has been regulated to “his guitarist”. Tomo was a fan, a member of the Echelon, before he was in the band. I may miss Matt, and I love Shannon (who is the best drummer alive), and Jared is just plain amazing; but to leave Tomo out of the equation is a crime. Period.

And I still have everyone beat. Yes, Jared interracts with the crowd. They have people come on stage to sing with them. But if you had been here in Vegas for the first concert of the tour, you would have seen Jared come up to the mezzanine, call my 10-year-old daughter to him, and sing to her. (It’s on Youtube in a number of places, but these are the best:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDgdF-ZnFZY (this one has the best sound)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCC-2x-SPJY (this is the close up version that my ex shot on his phone)

Nothing will beat that moment for me and my kids (I’ve been part of the Echelon for years, and they have decided to follow my lead!)

Hey Kristi! Thanks for your feedback. I am newly converted to the 30 Seconds To Mars camp and had only 30 minutes to write this review directly after the show. I couldn’t find Tomo’s name but now I know and I will change it!

I was there yesterday. It was a great set. Good article, except they didn’t play A Beautiful Lie. They played Attack from the album A Beautiful Lie.

30 Seconds to Mars is the reason why I went to Epicenter! I not only love their music but the fact that they incorporate their fans with their music & performance. I’m 39 and have loved them for years. They always put on an amazing show.
I totally enjoyed Blink 182′s performance also! They are always amazing! Can’t wait for them to make their next album.
Thanks so much KROQ for Epicenter 2010. C U next year!

Is it any wonder that Jared is able to deliver a fantastic concert? He loves his fans. He’s always reaching out to new audiences. He converts sceptics. He’s perfected the art of COMMUNICATION and ENGAGEMENT on stage! The shows are interactive. And if we all listen, we realise that Shannon’s unusual drumming and Tomo’s guitaring maestro skills just build the songs and concerts to an epic orgasmic HIGH!! That’s a triad.

The last sentence of this article might be my favorite (and most accurate) thing I’ve read in a Mars review! “And for a split second, every single person in the audience believed that this moment was made for them which is “such a beautiful lie to believe in.” Genius…. and true :)
I went to Epicenter only to see Mars, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Also, I agree with ‘angelarg’ I don’t remember them playing A Beautiful Lie, but they did play Attack.

I too only went to Epicenter to see MARS. Worth every penny of the almost $100 ticket, the hour drive each way, the 108 + degree heat just to see them play less than an hour!

Can you do me a favor KROQ and play “This is War” in its entirety on the radio? The butchered version you currently play on the radio does not do the song, or the band, justice.

I was disappointed in their performance, Jared didn’t singed any song completely and it was more of the show than good music. He was talking too much. I guess girls love this s**t, but I didn’t liked it, I was expecting to see higher class from them((
