Green Day Exceeds All Expectations – Live At Verizon Wireless 8/31/10

Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, 8/31/10 – Sold Out
It seemed as if the Green Day Twittyerverse was exploding between 8:30-11:15pm last night. Everyone that had a phone and two fingers was punching away furiously to friends, Facebook or Twitter about one of the best concerts of the decade. There were nearly a dozen “Oh my God, you’ll never believe what song Green Day is playing right now!” moments.
Yes, of course this sounds like an overstatement, but it was this feeling that swept the crowd during the show and stayed with us on our drive home. You don’t have to believe me, just search Twitter and you’ll see what I mean. Every single concert goer had that after-sex glow as they made the long walk out of Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Among the people going nuts was tennis star Serena Williams. She was Tweeting all night, basically narrating the entire show for her friends around the globe. Apparently, she’s a huge rock fan. Who knew?
It all started when dirty, beer drinking bunny hobbled on stage. As if he’d just woke from a night in a dumpster, he wobbled around the stage interacting with the audience. It was almost like one of the roadies found an old, thrashed bunny suit and said, “Hey, I’m gonna go out on stage with this on…” And the band said, “Sure, go nuts.”

From the moment that Green Day hit the stage, you could tell Billie Joe was energized and this wasn’t going to be any ordinary show. The giant LCD backdrop, the balls of fire, and perfectly choreographed explosions added the right elements to every song without ever upstaging the band.
“
I'm Billie Joe f**cking Armstrong, I'll do anything I want!
”
About a third way through the show, Billie started bringing fans up on stage. Yes, he’s done this a million times, but for some reason, this time seemed a little more special, and a whole lot funnier. He looked down at security and said, “I’m Billy Joe f**cking Armstrong, I’ll do anything I want!” Clearly, security believed him.
An Asian guy, probably in his early 40s, was called out from the pit. When he finally made it through the pit and up to Billie Joe, he stood next to him, almost dumbfounded, and grabbed the mic. “This is Billie f’ing Joe! (insert long pause) Billie f’ing Joe!” He’d step back a few feet then as if we didn’t hear it the first time, he repeated, “This is Billie Joe Armstrong!” The crowd erupted as expected. Billy grabbed the mic and graciously motioned to this awe-struck man that the only way to get off stage was to dive back into the crowd. And that’s just what he did. He grabbed his shades from neck of his shirt, slid them on his face and went running right off the edge of the stage. This was just the beginning.

Over the course of the night, throngs of people made their way onto the stage to sing along with the band.
Throughout the evening, Billie Joe made it crystal clear where the band was from and where they called home. “I live in Cali-f**cking-fornia!” I’m so happy to be back in California! Los Angeles County, Orange County… and surrounding areas… oh, and my friends in Riverside!” This was a reoccurring theme all night. Billie was clearly, and honestly, happy to be home. The crowd responded.
It was somewhere around “Geek Stink Breath” that the band members grabbed high-pressure water hoses and squirted the crowd. Everyone in the first 50 rows got nailed.
It was clear to everyone that Billie was having fun during every song. How often does a band’s front man put down his guitar and do a head stand? That’s precisely what Mr. Armstrong did during “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.”
Although we all hate to admit it, familiarity is the key to a good concert. As a concert-goer, you want to be able to sing along with every song. When a band comes up and starts playing new songs, yes, the über-music geeks writing for online music magazines go nuts, but the average schmo just stands there and bobs his head waiting for the next big sing-along. This is where Green Day excels. They over-compensate for each unfamiliar song by following them with blockbusting crowd pleasers.
“
I don't care, I'll play anything!
”
Then, there’s the cover songs. Sometime around 9:40pm, Billie Joe, (now affectionately known as rock music’s Energizer Bunny) decided that he’d take song suggestions from the crowd. “I don’t care, I’ll play anything! What do you want to hear?”
Among the songs that followed were “Sweet Child O Mine,” “Highway To Hell,” “Iron Man,” Hey Jude,” “Free Falling,” “Satistfaction,” “California Girls,” “Shout” and Led Zeppelin’s ”Rock And Roll.” Remember what I said about familiarity, well, this takes the cake. Covers of rock classics performed by one of the biggest bands on the planet is the best possible combination. Billy Joe, Mike and Tré Cool had all 15,000 fans eating out of their pocket.

After a 38 song, three-hour set with two encores, the exhausted and waterlogged crowd was treated to the final song of the night. What else… “Good Riddance (The time of your life)”
Working in radio, one of the perks is going to concerts and I’ve been to a few. Green Day turned up the knob to 11 on this one.

Wow I have seen them twice and both of the times they blew me away but I wish I could of been there. Our fans don’t get into it like these guys did. I knew there is a reason I want to move to California people are fun out there unlike here in the Midwest were people are just to laid back . Green day is my favorite band of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its my first time seeing them live, and the show’s freakin awesome!!
so many fans went on stage, and this lucky dude not only sang the WHOLE song of Longview but even got a guitar from Billie Joe!

They did the same thing at Lollapalooza in Chicago a few weeks ago, except the guy in Chicago sang much better than the “Curly haired fuck” at Irvine.Still hauling fans to sing on-stage then giving them a guitar is a great way to pump up the crowd and humanize yourself when 15,000 people are eating out of the palm of your hand.

great show, had a lot of fun, the only complaint that i have is too many breaks during the songs. Billie joe getting the crowd to yell hey ho, just got old. Its cool if you talk a little, but every song? OH and they didnt play welcome to paridise. Maybe its just me but id rather hear more old school green day then ACDC and Led Zepplin covers.

maybe you should have gone to see them in 94′ then buddy. They have two full CD’s out since then. They didn’t play Nice guys finish last either, maria, pop rocks and coke. They put the perfect blend of songs together. Just because they didn’t play YOUR favorite song from Dookie, doesn’t mean they chose wrong…

Holy s*it,
I was not going to get to go, because the girlie had something come up, and last minute we were able to get there. I can’t believe how freakin’ insane this concert was. It only made me reinvigorated to listen to old green day.. paper lanterns! Man, throwin’ stuff from 1990 out there. Too many good songs to list:
According to setlist, they played 38 songs.. re-dic-u-lous!

For those of us who have been to a rock concert before knows this show sucked. Too many hey hos, too many breaks in the middle of songs, and way too many put ur hands in the air. I paid to hear you sing not some kids karaoke version of your songs. What a lame show. Couldn’t you get a third act instead of a bunny? I was waiting for the wiggles to start singing.

My first concert was The Beatles in 1965. And I was the music reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution during high school. I’ve seen *everybody* ~ seriously, EVERYBODY ~ and Green Day was probably the second greatest concert I’ve ever seen. Maybe you just had some really bad weed.
Dookie Show
September 2, 2010 1:50 pm
Well Bev, I grew up and quit smoking weed a long time ago. When I go to a concert I expect the band to sing the songs without a 3 minute break in the middle of them. Maybe I just dont like their new song Heeeyyy Hoooo. They sang it 30 times. The show had moments of brilliance but they would ruin it with a hey ho or a put ur hands in the air. I guess I just like harder rock.

Bev is on the money. I’ve also spent a lifetime loving music and being a military brat I lived all over and had the opportunity to see the likes of the Beatles (1967/Tokyo/last tour), Stones, Kinks, Who, Zepplin, Dylan -that’s not a brag – it’s just a reference to what I’ve experienced relative to Green Day. I could go on with the list but Green Day can blow the shit out of any band with their writing and especially live performances (EXCEPT the Beatles and Dylan’s writing). Lucky for ME!!

You are an idiot. Green Day puts on one of the best shows ever. They interact with the audience and get everyone pumped up and into the show.

Since 1990 Green Day has put out 11 Albums including 8 Studio albums (Kerplunk,1039/Smoothed Out/Slappy Hours, Dookie,Insomniac,Nimrod, Warning, American Idiot, and 21st Century Breakdown) a best of collection (International Superhits), a B-side release (Shenanigans) and a live Video/Album (Bullet in a Bible). That’s not counting the Japanese live albums like Bowling Bowling Bowling Parking Parking, Foot in Mouth, or Last Night on Earth. Seeing them do songs from 1039/Smoothed Out/Slappy Hours, and Kerplunk as well as a never boring mix of songs from every albums, covers, and unreleased songs such as Cigarettes and Valentines was just a dream come true. Quite honestly the best night of my life. If you didn’t like them, I suggest you go f**k yourself, and don’t buy a ticket to see them, let a real fan, and person who likes good music go instead. If you wanted a “best of”, no soul concert, go watch Blink 182. The other 10,000 of us who screamed and yelled, cheering every time they gave props to California, or their tradition Hey Ohs, can honestly say you should stay out of their venues.

I thought I was the only one who would NOT rate this in my top shows of all time…but it just didn’t make the cut. I am a definite Green Day fan, have been since the 90′s…I have to agree with Dookie Show…too many “Let me hear you say Hey-oh”‘s and “Put your hands in the air”…the show could have been reduced to 2 hours without all that crap! Then Longview was ruined by what Billy Joe called a “Curly headed f*$%!” singing it instead of himself…then he received an guitar as a reward for butchering it……not what I anticipated at all…too long and too cheesy…sorry, but that is just my opinion…feel free to feel otherwise..I am not stating this to debate, just putting it out there.

I suppose you were lost somewhere in the terrace section. Save a few bucks and buy a ticket up close. I was on cloud 9 the whole night and I’m not a Green Day junkie, just a music fan, these boys can perform.

I’m not trying to start a debate either, I think they ruin some of their songs sometimes, but I still absolutely LOVE their live shows. also, it’s Billie Joe. With an ‘ie’ not a ‘y’.

Yeah, I saw them in Detroit when they came around this time, which was my second Green Day show; it was better than the first one last year, which was still an amazing show, and this is one of those times when I wish I could just hop over to California because they get so much of the band’s love. Well, it is their home.

As a forty-something and having been to many (50) concerts since my teens, this was the best performance I’ve ever seen. We all stood for the whole 3hrs *UnF’ingBelievabl’ – Note to self next time bring a poncho tho lol.
Green Day (Billie Joe), you guys are fantastic. Truly a ‘Fan’s Band. After seeing you I don’t think I’ll ever see another performance like this.

this show sounded so great! i saw them in europe and they were incredible but they’re really giving the US some love
and to the negative comments about breaks inbetween songs and the hey ohs…..billie tends to use ‘hey oh’ a lot if the crowd isn’t getting really into it as a way of pumping them up a bit. and i love the way he brings people of stage, what a dream come true for so many! green day are a band that really care for their fans and give it their all. they are by far the best live band and i think their interaction with crowd is so amazing, not every band can pull that off.

September 3, 2010 2:42 pm
Off the charts! This is the second time I’ve seen Green Day. I went to see them at the Forum last year and it was the best concer so far for me. I’ve seen other bands but they are not as awesome as Green Day. I took my nephew(he is 10 years old) to his first concert. He wanted to take it last year but I couldn’t so I took him to this concert. Green Day is our favorite band and their last two album might as well be the best of the last decade because their lyrics represent our society in so many ways that it is hard not to love their music. Green Day the best live band of all time!!!
