The title of guitar legend Carlos Santana‘s upcoming album is pretty ambitious: Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time. You’ve got to be pretty confident to consider yourself worthy of choosing the greatest guitar songs ever written, then performing them yourself! But Santana may be one of the few who has earned the qualification.

Plus, he’s selected some great names to help him record this collaborative album – Stone Temple PilotsScott Weiland (covering the Rolling Stones) and Soundgarden‘s Chris Cornell (performing Led Zeppelin), just to name a few.

Santana announced the new project earlier this year, around the 10th anniversary of his Grammy-winning album Supernatural. Back then he told Billboard about the album, “We’re not comparing or competing with those artists, we’re complimenting them. When you hear this, you're gonna go damn!
But when you hear this, you’re gonna go damn!’ because it sounds so powerful, with vitality and vibrancy.” Santana is producing Guitar Heaven with Clive Davis, the same music industry exec he worked with on Supernatural.

Also appearing on the album are Bush‘s Gavin Rossdale, Linkin Park‘s Chester Bennington and a number of other respected musicians. They will all be performing covers of iconic rock songs by the likes of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin along with Santana. The title and release date were recently announced; Guitar Heaven is set to drop September 21st. The deluxe edition will include two bonus tracks and a behind-the-scenes DVD. The album’s first single is already available — a cover of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” featuring India.Arie and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Pre-order the CD now on iTunes.
