Athletes You Need To Know:*

plg 385 X Games Event Spotlights: Skateboard Vert & Skateboard Big AirPierre-Luc Gagnon: Canadian Pierre-Luc is a fixture on the X Games podium. He owns a total of 14 medals — including 5 gold — and is going for the Vert three-peat in 2010. His past two seasons have been his most successful yet, and you can bet this tech wizard is about to become even more dominant with a personal ramp at his disposal. He found out after XG 2009 that he doesn’t have a PCL in his left knee, but he is just doing strength training, no surgery.

shaunwhite 385 X Games Event Spotlights: Skateboard Vert & Skateboard Big AirShaun White: Shaun is a superstar in two pro sports. He had his most successful season on a skateboard in 2007, then went on to a fairly successful (just not perfect) snowboard season. He hasn’t competed at XG since his Vert bronze in 2008, when it was jam format, but he’s back for 2010. Red Bull built him his own Olympic-sized halfpipe for the 2010 winter and it paid off when he won Winter X and his second winter Olympic halfpipe gold. The kid who started competing at WX at age 13 is now 23. He’s already got 2 snowboard video games and his latest game, this for skateboarding, drops in fall 2010.

lynz 100 X Games Event Spotlights: Skateboard Vert & Skateboard Big AirLyn-z Adams Hawkins: A seven-time XG medalist (3 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze), Lyn-z is a legend in women’s skateboarding and she is only 20. The defending Vert gold medalist became the first woman to land a McTwist, turning the trick in fall ’09. She’s known for her amplitude on the Vert ramp and is the master of all board sports. In addition to skateboarding, she is also a competent snowboarder and surfer. Over the spring 2010, Lyn-z was one of the only women invited to tour with Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus show in Australia.

Event Description:

Riders fly down a 60 or 80-foot roll-in ramp and launch over a 50 or 70-foot gap where they will throw down some crazy trick variation, which then shoots them into a monster 27-foot quarterpipe where they can pull off a massive finishing trick. The big-air ramp is one of the most dangerous objects at X Games, as we learned in 2007 from Jake Brown as he fell from over 40-feet in the air and was lucky enough to walk away alive.

Past Winners:

Big Air: Jake Brown (’09)

Rail Jam: Danny Way (’09)

Athletes You Need To Know:

burnquist 100 X Games Event Spotlights: Skateboard Vert & Skateboard Big AirBob Burnquist: Bob grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and epitomizes skateboarding and progression with his innovative switch stance skill in vert and Big Air. Bob is one of just four athletes who has been at every X Games, and his skill and dedication has earned him 17 X Games medals. A role model for fellow Brazilian skaters (and all skaters, really), Bob is heavily involved in business, with signature bamboo sunglasses and a website, Skateboard.TV, through his company Zoobamboo Entertainment.

lorifice 100 X Games Event Spotlights: Skateboard Vert & Skateboard Big Air Rob Lorifice: Twenty-two year old Rob Lorifice double medaled in 2009 at X Games (Big Air and Big Air Rail Jam bronze), his first medals in five XG appearances. A Southern California skater, Rob came onto the vert scene around the same time as Shaun White, and two skate together. Rob is a regular in the finals at major vert comps, and he’ll compete in 3 events at XG ’10: Vert, Big Air and Big Air Rail Jam.

is there a masters devision big air? how does someone start at the first brick of the yellow brick road? what training camps are lower entry level? I had a 22 year lay-off from 1980 to 2003. But I was a professional highdiver with 40 thousand highdives over 35 feet high. I had withdrawral symptoms but I think skateboarding aire will cure me.
