anberlin How Did Anberlin Get Their Name?

Anberlin probably sounds like one of the most obscure bands names you probably ever heard of. You might have been pondering how some bands get their names, and sometimes, you just never know. Lucky for us, SPIN Magazine spills the beans on how “Anberlin” came to be. It’s more than just the lovechild of an article of English language and your favorite 80′s pop group name (or German capital, if you want to get fancy).

In case you didn’t get what I meant, my theory was:

An + Berlin = Anberlin

But for the rest of us who don’t have a fantastically wandering mind like myself, there is a true story to how the boys of Anberlin found their band name. I can assure you, it wasn’t from a MySpace band generator that’s for sure.

It all started a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, when lead singer Stephan Christian was dazing to Radiohead‘s Kid A during his college years. He was certain Thom Yorke was chanting “anberlin” very discreetly in the song “Everything in the Right Place.” Sadly, a Google search brought up no proof of Yorke ever singing “anberlin.” Perhaps he was singing something else?

This happens to everyone. Also known as a mondegreen, this is when you hear the words to a song and sing them differently, sometimes humorously. Does this remind you of anything:

Inna Gadda da Vida was originally supposed to be In the Garden of Eden, but stuck after a stoned night writing music. It just “felt right” for the 70′s psychedelic one-hit-wonders, Iron Butterfly.

The same thing happened to Anberlin, minus the stoned night (maybe). After rejecting countless band names like Laredo, or The Clamor. Anberlin, was the name that felt right, because it stuck the best.

And you are probably reading this blog because you too are a fan of the name “Anberlin.” It’s got a good ring and it rolls off your tongue quite nicely. But if you’re still wondering who the heck Anberlin is, well get out from under that rock because we’ve been playing these boys more than you know. Heard of “Feel Good Drag?” Good, then let me introduce you to their newest single, “Impossible.”

Still trying to think of a cool name for your band? It’s very possible.

I say “Great Success!” on this story. This is something I’ve been thinking about for 7 years since I started listening to Anberlin. I love the name and I love the band. Keep playing them Kroq. I have a feeling the best is yet to come with this band. Especially if they do more remixes for their VERY early stuff.
