It’s a Roq of the 90′s weekend and we were sitting here debating if there’s actually a “best” KROQ band from the decade.
It’s pretty damn hard to narrow it down. Nirvana? Green Day? No Doubt? Sublime?
Most of these bands are still making amazing music today. Take Pearl Jam for example, arguably one of the 90′s biggest bands and today they’re better than ever.
We’ve compiled a list of about twenty five huge 90′s KROQ bands but we’re not sure who’s the biggest. Click more to vote or submit your fav.
If there’s something you want to hear this weekend, hit us with your online request OR speak with a human on our trusty ‘ol request line at 800-520-1067.

Where’s Soundgarden? I’d suppose you guys would have them since you play “Black Hole Sun” so much.

That’s why we have a write-in section on the poll. Cause we’re lame and couldn’t list ‘em all.

I added in Soundgarden. I can understand having the add in, plenty of good 90′s bands…
…but Creed? Come on, dudes.
Jon
July 17, 2010 6:43 pm
I added in Soundgarden as well. How can you have a ’90s band contest without Soundgarden?
Creed & Hole? Sheesh.

U2 is number one for the 80s.
U2 is the number one for the 90s.
U2 is number one for the 00s.
U2 will probably be the best for the upcoming decade!

July 18, 2010 8:43 pm
Right on brother. U2 is the best thing to happen to music since the guitar.

July 16, 2010 10:28 am
RHCP for the win probably not most influential band, but the fact that they are making music today that is still relevant… while the other 90s band have failed beside pearl jam.. is amazing
Jeff
July 16, 2010 9:14 pm
Who needs to buy RHCP albums, when KROQ plays them EVERY HOUR! Sheesh. Enough already.
Mike
July 16, 2010 10:15 pm
Radiohead is still making music today and one of the most influential rock band out there

No Doubt is still around, their tour last year was a big success. and they are in the studio for the upcoming album.
Jake
July 17, 2010 11:19 am
Agreed for RHCP, but I mean everyone has their favorite band and is going to hate on which ever anyone else says (Jeff) but think about it, if you go down list, less than half of those bands made it through the 90′s, instead of arguing about who was better we should just appreciate how f**king amazing the 90′s was compared to know.
Rhys
July 17, 2010 11:58 am
Just because a band is still making music doesn’t mean they were the biggest band of the ’90s. The poll is “who was the biggest band of the 90′s”, not “who played in the 90′s and is still playing now”… Just sayin…

While these are notably the most popular bands of the 90′s. Im going to have to add that the most influential bands of the 90s were Pavement, Sonic Youth, and The Pixies. Radiohead would get my vote.

jeez,
Korn were, most unfortunately, more influential than they were good in the 90s. They spawned an entire wave of crappy rock that was not even as good as they were. That’s not to say they didn’t have some great songs, but overall their body of work left a lot to be desired.
And, like RHCP and Pearl Jam, Korn is still making music. Unlike RHCP and Pearl Jam, it’s not worth listening to on any level whatsoever.

How is Creed on here and Tool and the Foo Fighters aren’t?? Is that some kind of sick joke.

July 18, 2010 3:31 am
bradley nowell bigger than Kurt? not a chance. sublime made good music, but it was only his death and the City of Long Beach that made them popular. Nirvana was totally different than anything else at the time and at a national level.
There are no bands today that sound like nirvana. there are plenty that sound like sublime. the dirty heads, LB short bus, chapter 7… the list goes on.
just sayin.
George
July 20, 2010 7:08 pm
shut your trap. First of all Nirvana was a blatant rip off of the pixies, pretty much most 90 bands where. As much as I like nirvana they were pretty overrated. Sublime fused punk, rap, dub, reggae, rock etc. Everything from the doors to the beastie boys. Norwell was talented and I honestly enjoyed his music more because it stood for love, music and peace.

Hmm.. I have a lot that I’ve liked that should be on this poll, but it comes down to three that I would vote. Rage, Nirvana, and SP. Rage hasn’t really come around as a band much anymore, so I won’t vote them. Although Nirvana was the most influential, I’ll have to vote for SP. Smashing Pumpkins are still making quality music, touring, and were a big part of the grunge movement as well, so they have my vote.

The early to mid-90′s was great for music. Nevermind, Siamese Dream, Ten, Tragic Kingdom, Blood Sugar Sex Magik etc. All great albums. Maybe it’s because I was young, single and childless that I feel nostalgic for the 90′s? Great times.

I’m gonna have to follow the fold with the Pumpkins… Still holds up. Although I am miffed by the lack of Female fronted bands on your list. Sure Gwen and Courtney held their own but remember Shirley, Dolores, Nina and Louise and Honestly you can’t forget the Kim’s (Deal and Gordon).
The 90′s sure had powerhouse male bands which I love and adore but during the 90′s the girls kicked some serious tail.

I think Smashing Pumpkins were the most innovative bands of the decade, but I voted for GNR just because the Illusions albums are such a cohesive masterpiece. Those are possibly the best hard rock albums of all time. If Led Zeppelin had ever stopped doing such blues influenced rock, they would have made the Illusions records.
Buddy

HOLE! she still is releasing music even after a tragic loss and has not let is drastically affect her music for this I have great respect for Courtney Love…

ya but Billy Corgan wrote and helped write a lot of her music. Even her new stuff. She has catchy song but does not write all her music. Therefore Smashing Pumpkins win
Shelly
July 16, 2010 10:43 pm
It’s obviously RADIOHEAD!
Pat
July 16, 2010 11:23 pm
The Smashing Pumpkins…without a fuckin doubt in my mind. Whether or not Billy is still relevant today doesn’t matter. Mellon Collie & Siamese Dream were masterpieces, you can’t touch them. Machina/the machines of god was such a well thought out concept album that Corgan threaded the end of the band into the storyline. Brilliant. Adore was a vulnerable, emotionally provoking cry of despair…the most beautiful, yet intricate & depressing album I have ever heard to this day. They changed sound with each album, and no matter what sound they tried, Corgan & co succeeded in sending shivers down your spine. Not to mention the enormous slew of B-sides & rarities that nobody knows about. Buy the one collection on iTunes, buy the Aeroplane Flies High Boxset, Judas 0, and then download everything odd & end related off of ThePumpkins.net. THEN try to tell me the Pumpkins aren’t deserving of this title. As a band they covered so much ground, and even their B-sides were “A” material.
There are many other fantastic bands listed here who deserve recognition, as well as others unnamed. Still, pound for pound, TSP accompplished much more musically & artistically than any of these others.
Elise
July 16, 2010 11:58 pm
Definetly Smashing Pumpkins. None of the listed bands has covered as much and different ground as they did. Funny that Creed is listed but Afghan Whigs isn’t? Or Buffalo Tom? And Cure and Depeche Mode are bands from the 80′s…

July 17, 2010 12:14 am
Smashing Pumpkins!!!!!! I wish I could hug everyone who has voted for them! Seriously, there were some great bands in the 90′s. And a lot of them are on here. But Pumpkins reign supreme over all others!!!
Mark
July 17, 2010 12:40 am
RHCP making relevant music? They are Oprah to music. They used to be fun. Soundgarden shouldn’t merely be ‘other’. Why give Depeche Mode a spot and not Soundgarden? Lightning, you’re overpaid and underqualified and your sarcasm repeatedly proves this. Pumpkins is my vote, although NIN made the better records post 90′s and TDS is on par with Siamese Dream, it’s just that Mellon Collie was the better double than the Fragile. A lot of corporate product rather than bands in the list it must be noted.
Niko
July 17, 2010 12:58 am
Pixies? They kinda opened the 90′s at a very high level and they arn’t even on that list?
Where is My Bloody Valentine too?
Well, labeling band 70′s, 80′s, 90′s or whatever is kinda stupid when bands run 30 years (DM, The Cure..)
They don’t belong to a period, it’s more the periods they crossed that belong to them

Alice and Chilis were both great.Tempted to give it to Pearl Jam just for their integrity. Tempted to give Nirvana the nostalgic, sympathy vote. But I gotta give it to Smashing Pumpkins. Say what you want about Corgan, but he can write a song and play the guitar unlike anyone else on that list. 15 years later and MCIS still sounds great.

Despite the fact that they are beyond super lame now, in the 90′s, with Chamberlin, SP were pure genius; Kind of makes sense that the greatest drummer in the world happens to play in the greatest band. Don’t forget who got you to where you are now Corgo. Any success you have now is in large due to those guys.
Dave

Radiohead was a decent band in the 90s (it’s actually when they made their best music) but they didn’t reach “huge” status until 2000 on.
But I guess most of their fanbase doesn’t actually remember that era as they were just little kids at the time.

It’s a no brainer! Nirvana changed the entire landscape of music. They ended the 80′s hair fad, men in leotards genre, Thank God! I can only imagine how much better music would be today if Kurt Cobain were still alive!
Bobby
July 18, 2010 1:00 pm
@Aaron [July 17, 2010 9:14 am]
The whole hair fad was already ending by the time Nirvana came along. Nirvana may have been the icons of the genre and the era, but they weren’t the first, or the best, in my honest opinion.
Also, for all the people saying the votes are swayed by people spamming the vote: When you try to place a second vote, it says “Thank you! Your vote has already been counted.”
So while it looks like it’s accepting a second vote, it’s really not.

Nirvana. Not only the best band of the 90′s, but also my favorite band of all time. I remember being a little kid and listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit on KROQ. Good times.

I have to say that every band except for creed is good but, Nirvana changed the music industry all together. Still the richest Dead musician over Elvis Presly.

A lot of the big names in there seem to have made their mark more in the last 10 years (Radiohead for example) than in the 90s. Bands that were really big in the 90s? Nirvana, SP, Pearl Jam. But as someone pointed out, Nirvana wasnt even around for most of the 90s.

who the fuck voted nirvana over nin, radiohead, or jane’s?!? Clearly the smashing pumpkins own this one.
Bob
July 17, 2010 1:37 pm
Im a big smashing pumpkins fan but there’s no way they’d be that far ahead in an actual vote. Obviously SP fans are spamming the vote.
I think thats that major difference between SP,Radiohead and other emo band fans is that they’re mostly internet nerds.
The fans of all these other bands are out getting high right now.

The three records Hole produced in the 90′s were so great.
Pretty On The Inside, Live Through This, Celebrity Skin. All so different and all so fucking good.

I might just have to add Deftones or At the Drive In. It’s just foolishness that they are not on there.
Radiohead gets my vote, without any hesitation.

This list needs a dose of GARBAGE. Best KROQ band of the 90′s ^_^
Vanessa

All the bands listed on this this poll are great. But I’m a HUGE No Doubt fan, so that’s where my vote is.
Seriously.. Creed… Hole..? Geez..

Garbage is one amazing band that was not included!

My vote goes for the almighty SP.

July 17, 2010 4:39 pm
I think Radiohead gained relevance and achieved the Best band of the world (not exclusive) status during the 00′s. By Best Band of the World status I mean like U2 did and like Green Day is trying to achieve.
But since it’s a 90′s poll ill go with the pumpkins.

No question….Smashing Pumpkins. I loved albums by some of these other artists like Radiohead (OK Computer), Pearl Jam (Ten), Nirvana (Nevermind), Chili Peppers (BSSM), etc.. but NO ONE in the 90s or maybe any decade ever has released back to back albums as good as Siamese Dream and MCIS, I still believe MCIS is the greatest album ever made. Factor in solid albums like Gish, Adore and Machina as well and it’s no contest. Smashing Pumpkins complete scope of work DWARFS what anyone else did.

Easily the Smashing Pumpkins without a F**king doubt in my mind! I was in High School from 92-96. Music got me through some tumultuous times in my life. At the top of the list of bands that helped get me through without putting a gun to my head was the Smashing Pumpkins. There aren’t words to express the gratitude I have for the music that helped shape quite literally who I am today.

There does seem to be a lot of sp fans on here, still they were/are the best band on the planet. Although how can you argue that sp fans are internet nerds when practically EVERYONE uses the internet now.

Smashing Pumpkins!!! No one measures up in the decade of the 90′s. From Gish to Machina and all the B-sides in between. Their B material that did not make it onto their brilliant albums were far better than any crap out there now. There were some other great bands on the list like AIC, but SP is the clear winner. Good to see so much love for them as well, rare to see these days. BTW, they are still rocking in 2010.

July 18, 2010 11:23 am
I’d say that U2 and the Beastie Boys would have a shot as the best 80′s band. Just looking at the 90s, RHCP was definitely the best. Californication and Blood Sugar Sex Magik are amazing albums

Nirvana was the 90s. The epitomized the whole Grunge era of not giving an F about their appearance. Smashing Pumpkins=overrated as hell. The only artist I 100% respect in the last 20 years is Kurt Cobain.
Kevin
July 19, 2010 10:17 pm
wow u have some balls talking about nirvana and calling another band overrated. especially calling a band overrated that is actually extremely underrated because people don’t look past their singles and see that some of their stuff was way to brilliant for the mainstream. Brilliant lyrics, great music. and yes im saying nirvana is overrated.

No Doubt is one of the few if not the only band on there that has grown out of the “90′s leftovers” cliche. No Doubt is among the few who’s evolved pass their 90′s sound and still relavent to this day. In 2009 their played about 60 arena shows which most of them sold-out and that’s without any new album to back the tour, most the bands from this couldn’t even come close to doing that good with a new album to back it. Plus No Doubt’s releasing a new album next year, which will put all those others to shame, not even U2′s last album did that well. No Doubt’s the few who follow the saying “don’t forget your roots, but also don’t rot” No Doubt’s more relevant and original while still keeping their root influences that made them who they are.

July 19, 2010 2:33 am
No kidding Chloe. Soundgarden is much better than most the bands on this list. If Smashing Pumpkins wins that would just be weird. They only had like 5 really popular songs. I however think Collective Soul is the best. Judge me if you want. I do love pretty much ever band on this list but Collective Soul just hits the spot for me.
Pat
July 19, 2010 8:49 pm
Wow, becca. I did not know that popularity or how many hits they had attributed to the bands on this poll. I thought it had to do with which artist was the best all-around to voters.Y’know, musically, lyrically, vocally, how the songs were structured, how many great or solid albums were put out.
You can look past a damn single, snob.
Kevin
July 19, 2010 10:13 pm
hahahahahahaha. wow. smashing pumpkins deserve to win this. Billy Corgan writes the best music out of any of the other artist. Fuck. Even their b-sides are brilliant so, no it would not be weird if the pumpkins won this.. watch this. and tell me that they don’t deserve it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA0sNVueB78 so much energy.

July 29, 2010 11:22 am
Kevin,
Considering Corgan has always been very good at turning even serious fans against him… the world tends to hate the Pumpkins. I love them. They are definitely my favorite band of the 90s. But I am extremely surprised to see them doing so well in this poll.
Dan
July 19, 2010 7:18 am
Wow, what a poll to have to vote for. There are so many good bands that came out of the 90s, so many good songs, just the epitome of good rock music. I grew up in the 90s listening to these bands, and they have all had a profound impact on me and the landscape of real music (that being rock music). However, no other band affected me as much as Collective Soul, so they have my vote. Ed Roland is just a lyrical genius. They weren’t revolutionary, but damn they know how to play and still do!

July 19, 2010 8:55 pm
You lot are crazy. Radiohead are by far the best band in the world and continue to push boundries – they are also innovators. Every album of theirs is so different from the last but they are instantly recognisable… that’s talent!

July 20, 2010 4:59 am
Smashing Pumpkins by far. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, among other reasons.
MDK
July 20, 2010 8:54 am
GARBAGE is the best band of the 90s! In a nutshell: two perfect albums (Garbage & Version 2.0), loads of B-sides, brilliant singles and music videos, countless fantastic live shows and the best frontwoman ever, Shirley Manson. Bonus points: Butch Vig produced Nirvana’s ”Nevermind” and co-produced Smashing Pumpkins’ ”Siamese Dreams”. Vig, Erikson and Marker also remixed artists like DM, NIN, U2 and so on. Very cool indeed!
PS: the best band of the 80s (in fact of all time) is the mighty DEPECHE MODE!

Wheres soundgarden? Nirvana is BY far the best band of the 90′s. Not dissing the other bands or saying the other ones are shitty ( except Creed and U2) U2 is WEAK and creed… well creed..Just sucks. but anyways. Yeah Nirvana is by far the best band of the 90′s. Love the other Grunge bands too!!

July 22, 2010 10:21 pm
Faith No More anyone? Jeezus. I think we need more musicians voting here. Faith No More was by far and away the best band of the 90′s. Incredible musicians.
Too far ahead of their time to be of their time.

Paul
August 19, 2010 10:06 am
To those who are raising their eyebrows at the inclusion of Depeche Mode, true they were more of an 80s phenomenon, however they made their three best and most popular albums in the 90s (Violator, Songs Of Faith & Devotion & Ultra), which sold 20 million units between them. I agree that the Cure shouldn’t be there though.

In all seriousness, I have to say as a child growing up in the 90′s the Smashing Pumpkins were the greatest thing to happen to my formative life that I can honestly recall. I never had such a passionate relationship with any other band from that era of my life. I have memories of riding the bus to school in 7th grade listening to Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness and being taken to another world that old sex drugs and pain would continue to reflect in my life as I got older. For about five to ten years in my life all I would associate so many deep an personal memories with their songs and albums that I can honestly say I was never so fully touched by music at a young age as I was by their musical ambition and lyricism. For a generation fed on blatant lies and falsehoods, the Pumpkins were the most raw and emotionally truthful thing I experienced as a young adult. The range of music that they produced and the likeness that they managed to produce to the situations in my own life were uncanny and I will never forget them for the beauty that they inspired in me.
much respect to everyone
