Remember that upbeat, airy song we played last summer called ‘Say Hey (I Love You)’?

Some cursed at us for playing it, while others requested it every day. For those of you who did in fact enjoy it, Michael Franti & Spearhead have set a release date for their new album, The Sound of Sunshine.

Although the album’s release date isn’t set until August 24th it is already gaining momentum with “Shake It” and the title track “The Sound of Sunshine.” This is Michael Franti & Spearhead’s seventh studio album and the follow-up to 2008′s Top 40 hit All Rebel Rockers.

The Sound of Sunshine was brought to fruition after Franti was hospitalized for a ruptured appendix in August 2009. “Music is sunshine. It gives us new energy and a stronger sense of purpose. You can’t hold it in your hands, smell it, taste it or even see it, yet somehow just coming together and feeling these little vibrations that tickle our eardrums can somehow lift us all up out of our most difficult moments in life to unimaginable heights,” says Franti.

The band began recording in Jamaica with producers Sly and Robbie who have also produced acts including Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana and No Doubt.  With the record still incomplete, Franti brought a mobile studio on the road with him while he toured with John Mayer this past winter. The album was eventually finished in dressing rooms and hotel rooms along the way with Franti playing songs he had recorded earlier in the day.
