Producer Alex with a Furry

This past weekend while we were checking into our hotel for the Weenie Roast, we got a great surprise when we noticed that a Furry Convention was going on. Some were wearing full on costumes, while some just went with animal ears and tails.

Click more to see some additional Furry action.

Seriously. WTF is up with you? Although, everyone was cool and we all had a great time together. What is going on in your head that you have to dress up in a costume?

Hey! Called in but didn’t get to you guys. If you’re wondering why it’s all seems sexual you should call a psychologist! We’re all people, no matter how furry we are, and people, being people, find a way of making anything they do have a sexual side.

If you take a cross section of Americans and their sexual escapades, I think you’d find that it’s roughly the same proportion in the furry fandom, we just don’t have the same social taboo about talking about or showing off those aspects.

I personally don’t see the appeal to it, but yeah people will bring sex to whatever you do. You think we’re bad you should look up the Otaku in Japan ;) .

As for why people do it, well you are spot on with the social awkwardness that a lot of folks seemed to have, except around other furs. Many folks that find the furry, much like those in anime, sci-fi, or other fandoms, have something that they like and aren’t good at socializing – but since they have something they like they can identify with others that have similar interests, and poof – socialization, and a subculture eventually appear.

I think furry got a huge boost from the internet because with the advent of the ‘net, people are effectively stripped of everything identifying about them on the internet. There are very few ways to make that collection of letters and/or numbers that are your user ID a unique and recognizable individual. Furry helps people express their individuality because it lets you generate a character that is purely your control! Shockingly enough (I know…) people often generate characters with a lot of features they do or wish they had. It’s a nice window into a person’s mind of how they’d like to be interpreted. It also is easier to express emotion as an anthropomorphic character online, which helps communication. After all, face to face people have a lot of non-verbal expression. Online, all of that is lost, so a wagging tail and a smile convey more emotion than a “:)”.

Hope that helps!

They were talking about the fashion, not the sexual aspect about it. Just a little fyi. I don’t know where that big speech of yours came from, this article wasn’t even aimed at the sexual aspect of your fandom.

Pretty sure he was responding to the K&B show on the subject, hence the first line.

“What is going on in your head that you have to dress up in a costume?”

Cause you were at a convention… and thats what people do at those things no matter if its furry, anime, or Trekkie?

Some dress up to escape themselves for a bit (this is me, fun to dress up as a zombie after a long week of work), some dress up to become more themselves. But after 4-5 years of going to cons it becomes a time to get together with friends that you haven’t seen since the con the year before. In the end it’s something to do with your money on the weekend, ultimately aimed at having fun.

That con was a blast, was good to party with you guys at KROQ. Turned a potentially odd meeting into a double party con.

There are many reasons why people wear fursuits. First you need to know that they represent only about 20% of furry fandom. They are kind of like rock stars. They get the most attention as you can see from the pics on the site. The rest of us are just in the background. So it is a good way to get attention. It is kind of like Halloween. You get to be someone else when you are in a suit. And a lot of suiters are rather shy out of suit. But in suit, because no one knows who they really are they can let loose an have fun. Some people wear them to advertise so they can get sewing jobs making more suits. Some people want to pretend that they are “really” the animal that they choose to portray. Others have a spiritual connection to particular animals and want to have a greater connection by looking like that animal. Ask a hundred fursuiters and you will probably get 100 different answers.

Bring a Band next year 2 Perform….

I had enough sound gear in the hotel to host a rockin’ concert. We had roughly measured the front of house PA at nearly 200db in the room. Is it any wonder the KROQ fans and guests tried to crash our party? If I am doing it again, maybe some of the furry bands can perform?

Hopefully, if it happens again, the con management can work out some sort of a deal so KROQ guests can get into the con, because I had an absolute blast hanging out with the KROQ guests, and crew that I met. In some eays, the KROQ guests and crew were something new, and different. As a 15+ year veteran of furry cons, this was definitely a new thing for me.

I was in costume much of the night dressed a s a latex fox, and the furries are often rather “jaded” seeing yet another person in an animal costume. Many of the KROQ folks were more fun to interact with. (Well the ones that weren’t avoiding the strange animal people that is :) ) I got a lot of “WTF is that!” comments, but the overall reactions were generally positive, and playful.

The KROQ crew, security, management, and team were absolutely professional, easy going, and overall it was a really great night!

BTW Smash! Thanks so much for all the effort and hard work you and the rest of the crew put in to help DJ CLANE and myself really bring the whole place to it’s knees!

I had a BLAST DJing for everyone, and I really hope we can do it again next year…and hopefully have some more fun with KROQ again!

I hope KROQ does this again at the same time as this other convention. I’d consider going to both events. It sounds like both groups had a hell of a good time.

Few things in life have struck me odder than “Furry Fandom”. Some of the most sexually deviant, warped and twisted people I’ve ever met were furries. Think of the mindset it takes to dress up in a football mascot outfit for hours on end, then either find another person in the same kind of outfit to have sex with or use a stuffed animal. Don’t you people overheat in all that crap? Not to mention what happened in your personal lives to make you so dissatisfied with being in your OWN skin? I understand the need for roleplaying in the bedroom but honestly people, you’re taking it just a tad too far. It’s sort of like going to Disneyland and suddenly watching Goofy and Mickey drop their pants and get busy. Talk about nightmare fuel!!!! Let the Furry-Bashing commence!

Excuse me, but not everyone who attended that convention is a sexually deviant furry. Some were professional or freelance mascots, who wear full-body costumes at public events to make children of all ages have a happier time. Honestly, efxman, you really should just point a gun to your head and shoot; there are already too many prejudiced bigots in the world like you, and no one would really notice you ever were missing.

You sound lonely and boring. You should come to a furry con, enjoy the partying and relax a little! You might enjoy yourself. :)

Uh, have you guys looked in a mirror lately? I mean all the body piercings, hideous tattoos, goth clothing, and hair colors in anything but normal tones…WTF is up with YOU and why YOU have to dress up in a “costume”?

We wear costumes for the same reason folks in the Anime, Star Trek and other fandoms wear them – to have fun and entertain others. And wouldn’t it be a boring world without fun?
