Please Help A True Victim!

crosswalk1 Please Help A True Victim!

On August 3rd, 2008, I witnessed a tragedy that still gives me nightmares.

As my wife and I were eating on the outside patio of Vittello’s restaurant in my neighborhood of Studio City, I casually watched as a mother and her young daughter crossed Tujunga Blvd., walking their two dogs. Out of nowhere, a speeding car came barreling down the street, and struck them all with a horrifying impact. They were thrown into the air like rag dolls, bouncing off of the car’s hood, and the piece of garbage that mowed them down sped off, without even slowing. Some of us who had seen the accident tried to catch the driver, while others attempted to comfort Annabelle and her daughter until paramedics arrived. They both suffered devastating injuries including shattered legs and pelvises, and one of their dogs was killed instantly.

Click more to continue reading this heartbreaking story and how you can help.Afterwards, I went on the air with the investigating officer and tried to help identify and capture the scum that destroyed the lives of these two innocent victims, but the driver was never caught.  I’ve tried to stay in touch with Annabelle to check in on her and her daughter, and to follow their recovery, but, I hadn’t heard from them in quite some time … until this week.

Things are not good.  Although Annabelle’s daughter has pretty much recovered, Annabelle herself still suffers.  She’s now an invalid, confined to a wheelchair, with some bones in her left leg STILL not yet healed 20 months later.  Medical insurance red-tape has left her with $25,000 in mounting doctor bills.  Annabelle has lost her job, her car, and her home.  She has been evicted from one apartment due to the financial strain of her injuries, and now faces eviction once again.  She can’t afford the proper medication, or the further medical procedures she still needs if she’s ever going to walk again.

Annabelle and her daughter are true victims.  Their lives have been shattered by a inhuman monster.  I’m taking this personally, not only because I relive that horrific moment over and over in my own memory, but because my wife and I have used that crosswalk 1000 times.  We will be using it to walk our newborn daughter to the park.  It could easily have been us.  Or you.

 Please Help A True Victim!

Please join me in helping Annabelle and her daughter with any donation you can afford.  We’ve set up an account for them at PayPal.  Just click on “Send money” and enter annabelleward@gmail.com in the “To” box.

If you would like donate via check or money order, please send those to:

Annabelle Ward

Your help would mean so very much to Annabelle and her daughter … and to me.

Thank you.

I was thinking the same thing. No one should ever go without. I work for a company that works with Medicare and some of the major insurance companies. I see a little bit of what national healthcare should be but I also see where private insurance could go right and wrong.

Her story, and Ralph’s own personal story, really shows where our own personal priorities should be. Being able to go to concerts and movies, etc is great but our priorities shouldn’t be with that (as some people’s are) but should be with family and health. Nothing should ever get in the way of those two, like our current healthcare does.

    Marilyn
    May 27, 2010 4:45 pm

Make sure you put in a valid email address for yourself

Frank
May 26, 2010 8:42 am

Another reason why we need national health care. There is no reason Annabelle should not be receiving treatment because she cannot afford it. It disgusts me to think that there are people who are so blind they don’t realize that private insurance does not care about them. They only care about money, and them paying medical bills for someone [doing what they're supposed to be doing] means less money in their pockets!

Decent health care should not only be available to the rich!

    nickichai
    May 26, 2010 11:58 am

Totally agree with you Frank; I was thinking the same thing as I heard Annabelle’s story. This kind of thing can happen to anyone through absolutely no fault of their own.

You guys should put together a cylcing and run/walk event for Annabelle. There are so many pedestrians and cyclists who are victums of hit and runs and this is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever heard. I am sure there would be a ton of supporters from the cycling community and people who walk and run the streets daily.

    Heidi
    May 26, 2010 4:55 pm

That’s a great idea! I second that! This situation is just awful, and I know many cyclists/walkers will relate to it. I had an incident on a bike with a hit and run, but my condition was far less damaging than Annabelle’s. What a terrible thing.

Hi, I work at “The Scooter Store” ( We sell Power Mobility Devices) and was wondering if in the mean time Anabel would be in the need of a Powerchair or Scooter that would help until she can get the proper Medical Care.
If so I could run this up to my superiors and possibly get a free Power Chair or Scooter until she gets back to her Normail self…..
Please let me know! Our Mission Statement is “We provide Freedom and Indepence to People With Limited Mobility”

Her email address worked fine for me. Try to copy and then paste it. Directions if needed: highlight (select is the correct term) her email address by dragging while clicking the cursor over it. Then from the edit menu on the top left of the screen choose “copy”. Then go to the paypal.com link and paste her email address in there by clicking in the “To” email address box and then again go to the edit menu and choose “paste” this time instead of copy. I hope that wasn’t too confusing.

As a single mother of four children, my heart is crying out for this woman. I am simply outraged that a person could be so utterly evil as to never take responsibility for such horrific actions. The people that know this monster should also be ashamed as they know what he did.
We take for granted each and every day the simple things in life. The ability to walk, to work, to play with our children. The fact that this woman may never even get to play with her daughter, (I’m talking running and playing) breaks my heart.
I too am going through hell with the medical system for my daughter and this health care system should be ashamed for leaving this mother in this condition.
We can take care of all the horrible people in the prison systems for all their aches and pains, house them and feed them, the same home that this monster should be living in now! But here is this MOM who did nothing but want to play with her child and dogs in a park. She followed the rules and crossed in a crosswalk, she worked, she paid her bills, and this, this is what she is awarded?
I am so very sorry to Annabelle and wish her the best of luck! I will pray for her and this God forsaken health care system!

Thanks for letting everyone know about Annabelle. I’m kinda broke this week, but happened to have 22.96 cents in my Paypal account to give. I hope all the listeners out there do the same. Even a few dollars is a lot of money to someone in her situation.

May 26, 2010 9:06 am

i dont know if Annabelle can read this, i hope this message gets sent to her somehow, i sent 20 dollars, its really the best i can do with my own personal financial situations. But as i listened this morning on the way to work it really shed some light on a few things and i hope i can explain. First off, i am 22, my girl friend is 19, and we have a kid on the way, i have a bit of debt that i am dealing with and money is a bit tight for me, but as i heard your story today i realized a few things. First and most importantly, i have been humbled by how stressed out i see myself getting and how strong Annabelle sounded on the radio today, despite the fact that she almost broke down she still kept composure, yet i see myself getting so upset over things that are inconsequential in comparison. I learned that there are still great people out there who still are willing to help as much as they can (kevin, bean, ralph & lisa). Annabelle, please stay strong and keep your head looking in the right direction, just from the immediate response i heard over the radio with law counsel i can only imagine things will get better for you. If there is anything more i can do to help you please let me know and i will find time to do what i can. I am a computer technician, potentially i could help with any computer issues or even come over and cook you and your daughter a meal. Best of luck to you, if i do not get any kind of response i understand that you are very busy trying to keep things together.

Dig deep people!!! This could of been anyone of us, at any point in time. Its a true shame that there are people like this a-hole that hit this poor mother, her daughter and her helpless dogs and got away with it. Just think if you were in her spot! The other big part of this that kills me is that if she could of got the right help and continued her treatment she would of been healed by now!!! That alone is a true slap in the face!!!! In my opinion this is just as equal of a crime than the hit and run that caused this in the first place. I just lost my job last Friday and know that every dollar counts right now but I can not sit idly by and let this travesty go on without giving at least something!!! Make a difference people and help out how ever you can. Even if you don’t have a dollar to spare just send here a kind word via email to let her know that she is not alone!!! Its up to us all to help or fellow man and show Annabelle that there are people in this world that care!!!!!!

This story makes me so angry. I don’t know all of the circumstances but I am glad that people are standing up and offering emotional, financial and legal support. [Note: Everyone should know that if you have "uninsured motorist" auto coverage, it will cover you should this happen to you but you must file within 2 years. Every little dollar helps.] It feels good to see people rally for one another. Love on.

Hey Ralph, thanks for the update. I remember hearing you talk about this on the radio when it happened, and I was wondering about it just the other week when I drove by Vitello’s. I just donated and posted on Facebook. Thanks for keeping abreast of the situation and letting us all know what we can do to help.

Who wouldn’t be touched by this story. I hope they get the driver and lock the b*****d up! But, what about the evil medical insurance? They are just as bad! How can they refuse to provide help? It makes my blood boil. Anyway, I donated $50 via Paypal and hope it goes some way.

Get well soon Annabelle and then you can kick some ass. We will ALL help!

Chris

Can’t help out a whole lot, but I gave a little to help do my part. If thousands of people can just give a little bit then hopefully Annabelle will be a whole lot better off. Blessings to those who are helping in whatever ways they can.

This story really impacted me today. In North Hollywood, not to far away from the event that occurred to Annabelle, a car hit my car from behind at full speed as I was stopped for a pedestrian crossing a designated crosswalk. Luckily, the pedestrian with her two dogs were not in front of me when I was hit. The person who hit me left. I suffered no injuries, only a bump on the head. My car was completely wrecked. I feel very lucky for how thing worked out for me, and now I will give everything I have to help Annabelle. I am sorry for what happened to her and things will turn around due to people like Ralph and all the people at KROQ. Thank you.

As I was thinking… I went to Esperanza High School, we took over a school across the street and it was a dangerous street to cross and lots of kids crossing several times a day. They built a bridge over the street to keep us safe. Don’t know if the funds are there for this cross walk to convert to a bridge, but, I wanted to plant the seed. If we as people are not safe walking across the street, maybe the right people can propose to city counsel, or the city to build a bridge… a little bit of money can safe a lot of lives.

This is so awful. I can’t imagine getting through something like this. I am donating $100 right now, but I wish I could do more. I heard she was being evicted if she doesn’t pay her rent. I hope someone who can afford it will cover that for her. I have a stop sign by my house in a residential area that people drive straight thru, sometimes going 40+ miles per hour. I yell at them constantly but they still do it. What can you do?

They need to put cameras at that intersection so they can get the licese numbers of anyone else who might do it. Too bad they weren’t already in place. We should all write to the city and get them to put one up. All the residents need to pressure them to do it. Lights and signs are not enough, trust me some people just don’t care. I gave $100, hope it helps. Stuff like this really pisses me off.

Thank you KROQ. I feel for Annabelle. Please folks keep in mind that there are MANY people in your community facing homelessness and financial devastation due to injuries and chronic medical conditions. This can happen to anyone. Kidney, Genetic, Neurological, Autoimmune diseases, cancer, all are on the rise due to unhealthy food supply and environmental toxins. Keep it local. Go to your dr and ask him if he knows of a person or family who is struggling and could use some assistance. Even $20.00 can help a family who is struggling to buy groceries or pay for necessary medication. If everyone did this the world would be a better place. Also, keep in mind that access to affordable medical care is not socialism! Health care shouldn’t be one of the most profitable industries in our nation! These are people’s lives and trust me, it could happen to YOU!

1. Ralph, I happened to catch the broadcast this morning. It incited tremendous feelings of sympathy and anger. I wonder if you guys can post a link of today’s interview with Annabelle. I think sometimes hearing circumstances can make more of an impact on people than reading a brief, albeit heartfelt, list of what this woman is going through. I can assure you that if you can get the link, I will forward it on to every, single person I know. I will be contributing as soon as I possibly can. Thank you for coming to the aide of this woman and her daughter.

I have donated in memory of a dear friend (newly-married) who was hit at a crosswalk by a hit & run driver and did not survive. It is shocking how often this happens. Ralph you are right, this was not an accident, this is a crime. I hope one day we can have health care for all; this random act of cruelty can happen to anybody and ruin their lives. Wishing Annabelle and her daughter happiness and good health soon.

I just donated.

I also shared this story on my facebook using the share button above. I also posted a blog on my blog site http://www.ryanaharrison.com to help get more donations.

I urge everyone to also blog about this, if you blog, and create a link to this story to bring in more people here to donate.

Also use the share button above as i did to share on your twitter and/or facebook accounts. I think this can really help multiply the donations tremendously.

We must not just donate, we must share this using the multitude of social networking sites out there right now.

Thanks and I wish the best to Annabelle and her family.

Is Annabelle in need of assistance with running errands on weekends? Maybe she needs someone to clean her house or do some grocery shopping for her. I have to imagine it is very painful to do these things we all take for granted. Let me know if I can help in that way as well.

I was devastated hearing this story this morning on my way to a seminar. This could happen to anyone of us. I would love to speak with you Ralph, I may be able to help Annabell with possible therapy and medical assistance however I need specific information that would not be appropriate to discuss over a chat line. I would not want to offer false help and therefore would need specific information. I am the Chief Nursing Officer of a hospital in the LA area which as an acute rehab unit. It’s unfortunate that cross “walks” are more like cross “run for your lives”! And how sad that the person who did this incredible damage to an innocent family is still out there somewhere. What are the chances that person will meet the same fate? Continue to pray for this family, and share this message with EVERYONE you meet! And for Pete’s sake, watch your OWN driving!

I am very grateful that people at the Kevin and Bean show especially Ralph since he was so personally touch by this story, are wonderful and caring enough to make all the listeners aware of such a horrible event so that we can show our support of someone in desperate need of help. Pay pal is so easy and was such a great idea. I wish Annabelle and her daughter all the best and I hope my as well as so many other’s donations truly help her in this great time of need. May God bless all of you, really…Keep strong Annabelle you are thought of and cared for.<3

And just a side note, may God bring the fiercest justice and rath upon such a lowly scum bastard who did this and didn’t have the humane decency to stop and take responsibility for your ignorant and selfish act. I hope Karma comes and bites you in the ass so effing hard that you will never be able to sit again. I hope that you are haunted in your sleep and you suffer 10 fold what Annabelle and her daughter have ever experienced.

Unbelievable, the evil that exists in the world that someone would do that to another human being and then just leave. Equally amazing though, the good in the world. Has anyone read through ALL of the comments, and done any math on the amounts donated?! Ralph, you are a good man, as so many stated, but KROQ LISTENERS: YOU ROCK TOO! YOU are the ones making the BIG difference in Anabelle’s life here… GOOD ON YOU!! How’s that saying go…? “Be the change you want to see in the world.” I’m proud to be in your company.

I donated $10.00, not much but I’m sure every bit helps. This is proof positive that bad things happen to good, honest people all the time, and we cannot forgot those who suffer at the hands of other, dishonest people.

My thoughts are with this family and all those who donate.

Best,

Marty

Ralph you are an awesome individual for doing this!

This story brought tears to my eyes & disapointment that life is not fair to individuals who shine in life. I donated $10.00. I wish I could donate more. I have a wife & 18 month old son. I would not know what to do if this tragedy would come into our lives. One day, this person who comitted this act of no disregard will have to answer for this.

I would love to help. I can have a fundraiser and give back 10% of sales to AnnaBelle. Please let me know if this is something Ralph would be interested in.

I have a wine shop where people could purchase from and I would ensure that 10% of the sales would be given to the family.

I’ve been listening to K & B for a long time now and I’ve always enjoyed the show but not today!!! It was very sad to hear how much this family has been through in the last two years. I thank the morning show for putting the story on the air which motivated me and my wife to contribute to their fund. we love how the show makes so much fun of just about any issue. it is nice to observe how the show helps out real people in real need. My wife and I are on board with helping this family in need.

I’ve been told I can be cold at times, and I guess that’s why i’m such a fan of K&B. I can’t imagine how a story like this, and the sound of her voice in pain wouldn’t make everyone that heard her donate money. I don’t make much, but i’ll do my part, and try to make more donations in the future, Keep us updated Ralph. Congrats on being able to take your girl home. Sorry about you boy.

Ralph is the mother-effing man. A man’s man, and the kinda guy I’d do this for without even asking why. At the same time this is a horrible tragedy, and we should all give what we can (like they always say anything helps) because it’s not like K&B ask us to do this sort of thing all the time. Finally I just wanted to say that it’s total BS that this whole time no hospital, no doctor and not even the damned Victims of Crime program recognized what was happening here and said “you know what? we are gonna make this right and give this woman what she needs” instead of giving her a subscription to narcotics that has crippled her financially. If Ralph hadn’t been there she would be screwed right now; I don’t even want to think about it. There is something seriously wrong with healthcare in this country.

What kind of work does Annabelle do, can she do a part-time job where she’s required to sit? I’m thinking of a place that might hire her and would give her insurance, could Ralph or Annabelle announce or post her qualifications or if she’s looking for a job?

I cried when I first heard this story and then again when Ralph gave us an update. I told my boyfriend, and with tears in his eyes he asked that I give in his name for his B-day instead of getting him a present. …and as a note to Ralph: with all of the grief you’ve recently encountered it is heartwarming to know you haven’t given up on this matter.

jessie kloppenburg
June 15, 2010 11:21 pm

I am so very confused for I know we have funded programs to help the handicapped and every other problem on God’s earth. What is being done or not being done to get her the aide she so desperately needs. The folks at the hospital and the police dept are supposed to get the ball rolling here. There are so many agencies that are available for her needs. Can’t the people who saw the accident help get her the aid she needs.? There was a notice on freecycle for us to donate things to this person who was having garage sales to help her. I would really like to do more but i live in Camarillo and disabled myself. It just sounds like a script for a movie. It could not happen in real life. What a shock. Thank you for all you are doing and please keep us informed about her and if someone is finally getting her the aid she needs. Thanks Jessie

PLEASE ..please, please…you all do not know the entire story here. This woman has now moved from victim to con artist. She was paid handsomely by Victims Compensation. She has told her friends that she purposely goes around Tujunga Village in her wheelchair when she does not need it because she receives more money that way! She has engaged in horrible allegations against her daughter’s father in order to get more child support when he was already paying far more than most EVER pay! I was one of the people who offered my time and help to her until she wanted to play games with me and have me help her kick a roommate out of the house that the roommate paid for! (She paid an entire year’s rent UP FRONT so Annabelle was living in Studio City for free when this all happened! She never paid her roommate back a cent for the rent and then tried to get that roommate evicted!) This woman is not the poor victim you believe her to be – save your money and keep her in your thoughts and prayers that she DOES heal from the inside out… no one deserves to be a victim of a hit and run (I was a few years ago myself) but there is a point when you have to accept responsibility for your own healing and move forward no matter what. I am so sorry to have to reveal this but you all should know just who or what you are dealing with.
