Florida natives Against Me! started as a one-man acoustic act. Tom Gabel started the band in 1997 at the age of 17, occasionally performing with a drummer or bassist, and played several intimate shows and released a few demos and EP’s for the first few years. By 2001 a band had assembled, and their live shows continued to amaze people, eventually earning them honors as one of Spin Magazine’s 25 greatest live bands of 2006.

More Against Me! after the jump!

After a few EP’s were released, the band put out their first full-length album, Against Me! Is Reinventing Axl Rose. The title track and “Baby, I’m An Anarchist” helped them gain more widespread popularity. After a few lineup changes, a solid crew made up of Gabel, Warren Oakes (drums), James Bowman (guitar) and Andrew Seward (bass) formed in 2001 and thrived until Summer 2009 when George Rebelo replaced Oakes on the drums. The band released a 3-song EP in late 2002 called The Disco Before The Breakdown.

The band signed to Fat Wreck Chords in 2003 and put out their second full-length, Against Me! As The Eternal Cowboy, that same year. In 2005 they released their second full-length on Fat, Searching For A Former Clarity, which debuted at #114 on the Billboard charts and featured the single “Don’t Lose Touch.” The music video for the song was shown on Fuse and MTV’s Top 10 and the performed it on Late Night With Conan O’Brien.

In 2006 their first live album and last on Fat Wreck Chords, Americans Abroad!!! Against Me!!! Live In London!!! was released. In December 2005, the band announced that they had signed with Sire Records, who didn’t release their album New Wave until December 29, 2006. Spin Magazine labeled it as the best album of 2007. Their single, “Thrash Unreal,” had huge mainstream success and peaked at #11 on the U.S. Modern Rock chart.

Against Me!’s second album via Sire Records, White Crosses, will be released on June 8th and features their new single, “I Was A Teenage Anarchist.”

Hardest working band at the Weenie Roast. It will be a shame if they get stuck opening the side stage.
