We all know Tom Hanks can deliver when it comes to the big screen.

He’s broken ground by recounting epic war stories like his work in Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. His production company even turned ABBA’s Mamma Mia! into a worldwide box-office success a few years ago. According to reports, the next item on his to-do list is a film adaptation of the musical inspired by Green Day‘s American Idiot album.

Based on Green Day’s 2004 concept album, Billy Joe Armstrong and Tony-winning director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) wrote the musical’s plot for its original premiere last fall in the band’s Berkeley hometown.

In a collaboration, Mayer speaks fondly of in the clip below. The duo incorporated 23 Green Day songs, some additional dialogue and the album’s original coming-of-age storyline of three small town friends and their varying life paths dealing with love, loss and war. Armstrong even added in an unreleased love song written when he was 19, heard for the first time in this musical.

While the musical is set for a Broadway debut on April 20th, word is that Hanks and his Playtone production company are ready to start moving ahead with the feature film adaptation as soon as possible.

I don’t know about you, but I have faith in the man who not only brought us the gut-wrenching story of WWII’s Easy Company but who also produced a stage-to-screen phenomenon with Mamma Mia! grossing over 600 million dollars. Yeah…. that and Billy Joe? Definitely.
