Coachella Artist Spotlight: Street Sweeper Social Club

Tom Morello is the sh*t. There’s no better way to put it. And when you put him together with Boots Riley (of [lastfm]The Coup[/lastfm] fame), it’s really pretty mind-blowing. And that’s exactly what [lastfm]Street Sweeper Social Club[/lastfm] has done to me, blown my mind. And, you can get your mind blown too when they play Coachella. Lucky you.

Check out some of their high-energy on-stage performances by clicking more.

Morello and Riley first met during [lastfm]Billy Bragg’s [/lastfm]Tell Us the Truth Tour in 2003 where Morello often joined Riley on stage as his acoustic folk alter ego the Nightwatchman playing acoustic versions of The Coup’s songs. After a Coup show in Los Angeles Morello approached Riley over a dinner with the idea of forming a band to play “anthems for the revolution”. Morello gave Riley a cassette with instrumental demo songs asking Riley to listen to it, write something and then get back to him. On the 2008 Nightwatchman tour, Riley made frequent appearances on stage to play the song “100 Little Curses” with Morello, which later became the first single released off their debut album.

For the recording of the bands debut album the duo enlisted the help of drummer Stanton Moore while Morello handled both the guitar and bass playing throughout the recording.

Morello and Riley released their self titled debut CD as Street Sweeper Social Club last June and have taken their act to the road ever since.  Aside from Coachella, these guy will be hitting up a bunch of venues at South By Southwest along with a pair of Warped Tour dates.

This has to be my favorite Street Sweeper Social Club song. The Oath. Give it a minute or so to kick in.  It starts with an almost folksy feel (a la Tom Morello’s [lastfm]The Nightwatchman[/lastfm]) but comes around to melt your face off, which is always a good time (unless you’re Heidi Montag).

And they even do covers!  Watch the boys do [lastfm]MIA[/lastfm]’s Paper Planes.

And on a personal note, I’ve never been in the presence of a cooler combination of people than when Tom, Boots and Tom’s mom Mary, came in to chat with Dr. Drew on Loveline.  Standing next to that much cool apparently makes you look like you’re constipated. At least it did for me.

I saw these guys at Epicenter 09, and they were amazing. While I won’t be making Coachella, I really do hope I can see them again sometime this year.

also, they are playing the first date at Warped Tour if you cannot make it to Coachella.
