January 4, 2010 7:11 pm
I’m very disappointed too. Depeche Mode has been around for over 25 years and can still sell out arenas all over the world. I doubt it if any of these bands will even be together longer than than 10 years or if their music is even played on the radio in the next decade.
Peter G
January 16, 2010 1:03 am

January 2, 2010 1:33 pm
Who made “Use Somebody” number 1?!? Was this list made by a KROQ employee? “2 am” should really be number one, “1901″ should be number two, and “The Few That Remain” should be number three!
Another thing, how can KROQ refer to “Decode” and “Love Hurts” as a top song from 2009, when you guys debuted both songs in 2008?!?
TIM
January 3, 2010 9:51 am
Youtube “m83 don’t save us from the flames” you will notice where KINGS OF LEON ripped off Use Somebody from

this list is sad! i was always a big fan of kroq, but this year you could compare kroq to the lions of the nfl. YOU SOLD OUT KROQ!!! Way to over play bad songs like kids
Jordan
January 3, 2010 12:25 am
The Strokes are by far the best band of the decade then it’s maybe chilli peppers but I have to agree with ryan kroq sold out I mean kings of Leon ?!?!? Really? January 2, 2010 2:24 pm
The list makes sense. The position of the top songs seem to exactly correspond to how frequently they were played throughout the year.
I like how the “top 20″ for the previous years are the same as your past top 106.7 countdowns, except if a songs was on the lists two years in a row. Then you’d replace one of the repeats with a different song. Haha, love the effort!
alexcuse
January 2, 2010 2:41 pm
30 seconds to mars should’ve made the top 20 over black heart inertia which hasn’t been played since summer anyways

Silversun Pickups should be #1, Pearl Jam should be in the top ten. I hope there will be more songs added to complete the list.

really use somebody? number one. never would of guess it. some of these songs shouldn’t be in the top 20. love hurts-sucks and i like incubus. paramore-decode. notion by kol what about wrong by depeche mode. luv that song
Krotos
January 2, 2010 5:28 pm
Panic Switch, Uprising, or Kids should’ve been number one. An immense let down KROQ. I have always been a devout listener and to see Silversun Pickups, the freshest artist of my time, be second banana to the MOST PLAYED song of the YEAR?, makes me rethink where exactly your loyalties lie. I was hoping to be impressed. Just finish off the rest of the 86.7 and show me the KROQ i know and love.

Leave it to kroq to have 11 of the top 20 of 2009 to not even be from 2009 (including “Kids,” a song released in 2005). So for the first time in 30 years they don’t do a 106.7 countdown – no wonder — it’d be the same music as last year.
I remember back in the 1980s when KROQ actually had balls. I’ve listened to KROQ since about 1986 (though much less over the past several years) and this just about does it.
Enjoy your meat curtains.

The list has a lot of the correct songs except the order of them all is terrible. Also no Them crook vultures? 30 seconds to mars? no Wheels? come on now…

January 2, 2010 11:15 pm
The songs from 2009 are nowhere near as good as the songs from the beginning of the decade, much less the stuff from the 80s and 90s. Now I’ve been listening to Lady Gaga and the pop stuff on the other stations, they’re more creative than 2009 KROQ. Very sad, come on KROQ, give me a reason to come back to you!

January 3, 2010 9:23 am
Hey kroq, just wondering, but what data do you base your “top 20 most played of 2009?” because according to mediabase, these should be your top 20 most played:
1. Use Somebody – Kings of Leon
2. Panic Switch – Silversun Pickups
3. Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon
4. I Don’t Care – Apocalyptica
5. Kids – MGMT
6. Love Hurts – Incubus
7. You’re Gonna Go Far Kid – The Offspring
8. Feel Good Drag – Anberlin
9. Savior – Rise Against
10. New Divide – Linkin Park
11. Uprising – Muse
12. Hammerhead – The Offspring
13. Pork and Beans – Weezer
14. The Good Left Undone – Rise Against
15. The Pretender – Foo Fighters
16. Prayer of the Refugee – Rise Against
17. Decode – Paramore
18. Believe – The Bravery
19. 2 AM – Slightly Stoopid
20. Audience of One – Rise Against
Some of these songs that you put as your “Top 20 most played”, according to mediabase, really came in at:
23. I Want To – Weezer
22. Medicate – AFI
38. 21 Guns – Green Day
31. 1901 – Phoenix
39. The Fixer – Pearl Jam
36. Ain’t No Rest For the Wicked – Cage the Elephant
35. Notion – Kings of Leon
42. Black Heart Inertia – Incubus
Granted, i dont know what the accuracy of mediabase is. but i also thought this list was kinda off, so may i ask for an explanation? http://www.allaccess.com/mediabase/q/report/yearPlaylist/station/KROQ-FM

January 3, 2010 12:09 pm
KROQ’s End of the Year lists are always biased towards the biggest songs or hippest artists, even if a song wasn’t actually played much or at all. KROQ had The Fray’s “Cable Car” on a list a few years ago, and never even played the song. Last year “The Pretender” was #3, when it was #1 the year before.
Still, I would like to see a Top 106.7 songs list for this year
Stephanie
January 3, 2010 12:29 pm
I’m glad that Phoenix made it in here 1901 is very unique and awesome, I think its should’ve been in the top 5 at least, since some of these songs are from many years back.

I don’t mind Kings of Leon taking the top spot… they are a nice change from the 90s re-hash like the Offspring that KROQ continues to play. But these are my Top 20 “alternative” songs of 2009:
1. Bat For Lashes – Daniel
2. Metric – Help I’m Alive
3. Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch
4. Royksopp – The Girl and the Robot
5. Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
6. Phoenix – 1901
7. Ladyhawke – Paris Is Burning
8. MGMT – Kids
9. Royksopp – This Must Be It
10. Kings of Leon – Notion
11. Metric – Gimme Sympathy
12. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero
13. Dead Weather – Treat Me Like Your Mother
14. Rise Against – Savior
15. Neko Case – People Got A Lotta Nerve
16. Atreyu – Storm To Pass
17. Metric – Gold Guns Girls
18. Muse – Uprising
19. Sondre Lerche – I Cannot Let You Go
20. Phoenix – Lisztomania

January 4, 2010 12:09 am
No top 106.7 for 2009? that’s BS; disappointing. And the top 20 lists for the other years are suspiciously similar to the original top 20 songs of each year (people voting? yeah right). At any rate, I don’t see the point of posting the lists for everyone to see… the ones who care will find it ridiculously inaccurate, and the ones who don’t care… well, they’re not even here >_>
Adam
January 4, 2010 12:44 am
I noticed the same thing. The top 20′s from the year before are just the top 20′s from the top 106.7 songs of previous years. If they dont post those lists back up or make a new 2009 list of 106.7 songs then ill be pissed too. but yea I agree with you. hmmm
Adam
January 4, 2010 12:27 am
Now I remember how bad 2009 was because Kings of Leon got number 1
I hate them so much and I wish I wouldn’t have to hear another song by them ever again. Except Notion. That one was awesome…but seriously KROQ quit playing them so much. I gave them a shot the first 100 times but after 999999 times hearing use somebody I just want to change the station. Constant KROQ listeners like myself all know what I mean
David
June 14, 2010 1:52 pm
SOOOOOOOOOOO F-ING TRUE!!! Kings of Leon SUCKS! I have stopped listening to KROQ in the last year because of them. I listened to KROQ for the last 20 years and I cant anymore. The singers voice makes me want to rip my ears off

Funny….I said a few days ago that their current playlist is basically what they’ve played over and over again allllll year and this Top 20 of the year simply proves it. Not much different from their current top 20. Sad. So much new stuff out their that should be getting played right now – Hallucinations from Angels and Airwaves, This is War from 30 Seconds to Mars, Undisclosed Desires from Muse and anything off of the new AFI. Thank God My Cemical Romance and bands like Interpol and hopefully Coldplay will have new stuff out soon. Get back to being the type of station you were in the 80′s and play the new Hot Chip, Neon Indian and even some of the Shiny Toy Guns tracks off of their remix album. Even the studio tracks on that would sound great on KROQ.

Many of the songs listed do not deserve to be in the top 20 of the year as the Weezer one (the worst of their carrier, I’m a fan of them!!!), the Muse (ordinary! ordinary!)….
You have forgotten the 2009 masterpiece written by Jason Lytle (the best album of the year and of many years so far!), the Raveonettes, Artic Monkeys, The Horrors, White Lies, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Editors, Art Brut and Maximo Park.

Well wasn’t expecting Love Hurts on this list, but hey its crazy good. I would have it #1 ha. I will never understand why I Don’t Care is so popular, and i would never have it on the top 20. I’m just gonna imagine Know Your Enemy by Green Day is there. Weezer wayyyy to high on the list, better than Muse and AFI?? Suprised Fireflies isn’t on the list, but i don’t really care ha. And hmmm I say take out Audience of One and put The Few That Remain somewhere on there.

This is by far the worst choice of songs ever assembled. 2 Kings of Leons songs, 2 Incubus songs, and 2 rise against songs… WTF? The entire year, they couldn’t come up with 3 other songs? It pretty much just showsthat the meat head who put this together, doesn’t take it seriously or care about his audience.

No YYY’s?!?! Hey KROQ, look at NYC once in a while. That is one of the best bands of the aughts and they definitely should have been up there for “Zero” released around March ’09. For shame.
And how about The Killers “World That We Live In” I know that album was really played played out by early summer ’09 when it came out, but that song is great. And just insane live.
My two cents.

thank you! i mean this is just too sad. i just started listening to this station again online cuz i live here in missouri and i was really excited to have my husband listen…but we both noticed they play songs from the same artist within the same hour they really need to spread out plus i hear mostly new songs..i barely hear the strokes, depeche mode, franz ferdinand, modest mouse, the shins, and well i theres so many i haven’t heard but here are some that need to take a chill pill muse, rise against, and maybe a lil nirvana. the ones that need to just get off this station is freakin paramore, linkin park, and green day.(which both are now freakin sell outs) please mix it up and stop getting too mainstream. The only one who keeps it real anymore is RODNEY!!!.i love that you play mgmt, phoenix, and vampire weekend just dont kill them and for god sake please play more ARCADE FIRE!!!

Wow, why did you guys sell out? Nowadays, all I hear in Kroq is Indie and Alternative stuff. What ever happened to Punk, Metal, and other great genres. Society sucked in this horrid virus known as, “Alternative”, and killed Rock N’ Roll. Please come back to your senses Kroq and it’s staff.

July 14, 2010 12:36 pm
why kroq did nt do a list with the 106 best songs but only with the 20 ??
its the first time since the beginning of the list 1980 that there is only a top 20
and i totally disagree with the most
as depeche mode is still an important band even in the usa with every album making the top 10 in the usa
but their last record was not a hit as it had not even one song which made the us hot 100
therefore i understand why none of their songs made it into the list
greetings from germany

There is not one Hard Rock song on this list, The only ones that are actually Rock songs and not Alternative are I Don’t Care and Feel Good Drag.

I agree, and well, at least the list HAS good music. The list is good and I don’t know WHY people are complaining. But that’s all the way in January. I’m almost positive no one will read this. So I’m alone… ANYWAY, Rise against rules! and jayman, if you’re out there: Hi!!! People are just too critical. So yeah… the next person who’ll read this, it’s probably gonna be august or novermber.

September 14, 2010 11:58 pm
Huh? What song did DM release that’s worthy of being in the top 20 of ’09? There’s no question that D’Mode is a legendary KROQ band. But all they’re really been doing is touring. Not much ground-breaking music has come out of their camp in the past few years. We do though look foward to getting them back on the air with new music. And, we never would have guessed you were a fan by your email address… “dmchick78.”

KROQ sold out a long time ago. I’m actually surprised to not see Nirvana, Rage’s Killing In the Name, or anything by the Foo Fighters on this list. They play that stuff like it’s new. Don’t get me wrong that was good music…. like 15 years ago.

IM from germany and i loved kroq in the past
they always played alternatve stuff which wasnt played by other radio stations
finest new music
but what happened in the last 3 years ?
they only play more and more mainstream rock and more poppy songs
the 106.7 lists were legendary
the top 20 list is creep
and why songs of 1-2 years ago chart on lists of today ???
USE SOMEBODY was released late 2008 and it charted well on the billboard hot 100 and modern rock tracks in 2008
bands which were played by KROQ in the past which became mainstream acts in the usa
DEPECHE MODE
MGMT
KINGS OF LEON
THE KILLERS
FRANZ FERDINAND
PET SHOP BOYS
ERASURE
GREEN DAY
OFFSPRING
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS
its quite strange
